I am given this for work and must use it.: At A Glance Monthly Calendar Book
Anyone have any examples of how to make it prettier than me just writing in different colors?

As you mentioned, using different colored inks is one way.
My planner is pretty basic, like yours but I add stickers, washi tape, I even print out photos from the internet and paste it on with a glue stick.

Warning! You are approaching a black hole that will suck you in! Pinterest, Youtube, and Instagram will suck you in forever! Mwah ha ha.
No seriously, this is quite addictive for some. I know many of the ladies will have specific links and suggestions for you. But it's amazing the things that can be done to pretty up planner these days.
Washi tape, stickers, banners, dashboards to hold your post it notes, custom covers, you name it. It can be a tight rope act between too fancy and functional though.Good luck and have fun.

I'm trying very hard NOT to make my planner into a scrapbook, lol, but boy, that calendar is kind of boring, isn't it?? You could choose a few different colors / patterns of washi tape, and mark different meetings / events / or days of the week with the different colors / patterns...
such as: mark the days of department meetings with blue tape, mark the days projects are due with red tape, etc. Or get small different colored stickers to mark things- that way you can use multiple stickers on each day. Whatever you decide, you can make a page right inside the front cover to be a 'key' or 'legend' for the different colors and symbols.
You can make 'flags' with ribbon tied onto paper clips to mark certain pages, add folder tabs to the edges of the pages, etc. I've also seen that you can (carefully) add things into the spiral binding by hooking a paper clip into the binding-- then you can slide a piece of paper into the paperclip. That way you can add extra pages / index cards, etc. into the middle of the calendars.
I would also really need to make the cover more colorful if it was mine-- either with stickers, washi tape (which may not stick very well), or gel medium + collaged papers.

Warning! You are approaching a black hole that will suck you in! Pinterest, Youtube, and Instagram will suck you in forever! Mwah ha ha. There is a lot of truth in above statement. Proceed with caution. I would decorate with washi tape on the outside edges, but so they cover two pages at once, to start. Example here.

^^^ I like that! decorating the edges with tape makes the page edges sturdier, and you can do each month with a different color, perhaps, so you can know at a glance which pages to turn to. or maybe alternating colors...

My DD (20 yr) is totally consumed with this trend of BuJo and custom planners. She has a serious addiction to cute washi tape and stickers She has realized a better balance this semester between "do-able" layouts for her months instead of the very detailed stuff she created over the summer when she did not have classes and homework! It can be a slippery slope but lots of fun!
