Got on the treadmill today ready to run 5 miles and just couldn't:( I am hitting a big wall mentally and am lacking any motivation to run. It really stinks because my half is only 2.5 weeks away. It's so hard to run all the time on the treadmill without going crazy so I'm going to attempt to run tonight with my brother. It's suppose to rain so at least the sun is out. ETA: didn't run as it started lightning and thundering and my brother didn't want to go out in it. So, I am staring at the treadmill and thinking I am not running today. I just don't know why I am lagging, especially in the final weeks of training. I know for sure, next half marathon, I will plan to train in the winter time. AZ summers are just too hot and miserable to run, even at 4am! I have been in AZ in the summer and it is brutally hot. I wasn't a runner then, so i can only imagine it's like running in an oven. We are the opposite here - super humid - as opposed to your dry heat. I hope you can get back in the swing for your half

Summer running is so hard! The heat and humidity is brutal. Fortunately, the summer in NoVa hasn't been as bad as usual and running hasn't been completely miserable. I admire you, candygurl, for training for a half on the treadmill. I had to hit the tready this winter for training, and it sucked! I braved several snow storms and icy sidewalks before I finally broke down and did my miles on the treadmill. I did my track workout last night after the thunderstorms left the area. Ladder drills at 5k pace…I finished but it was definitely a workout. Track work is really helping my speed. I'm still slow as a turtle but I am less slow that I was 6 months ago. :-) Track workouts are really not my favorite, though. Most of it feels like complete torture.

I find the humidity and the bugs that go with, the real struggle here on the East Coast. And I can withstand both if I can run by the water, which I try to do at least one run per week. I've not done any track runs since college, lol. At this point I'm really focused on staying injury free so sadly, while I'd like to improve my time, distance and comfort is my goal. At my age, 55 yo, osteoporosis and stress fractures are a HUGE issue. I've already been dx'd with osteoporosis and told I shouldn't run. I got a new endocrinologist since even my GP didn't agree with that... Candygurl, I've found myself on the treadmill more than I'd like while training for a half as well. I can loose myself in the rhythm of the run/music/own thoughts, that it's just like a mantra and it's over before I know it. I can almost deeply meditate while running... Try to incorporate some kind of meditation practices. Reach for that endorphin "high" and then enjoy it. Plug in. It makes the miles roll by...

thanks guys! i will take the hot summer days over humid ones! as we arizonians like to say " it's a dry heat" here. could not imagine running in the humidity.

i have to preface this with "don't yell at me " but i have had an odd pain in my ankle for a couple of weeks now. Nothing debilitating, or stopping me from running (obviously), but an annoying hitch in my giddy-up. Anywho, last night i had to get up a couple of times and thought i might have to NOT run this morning. Stubborn me got up and out there this morning anyway, and after about a minute it felt fine. And now, it feels better than ever! I'm hopeful i've powered thru this; we shall see!

I was a runner and triathlete prior to getting pregnant. I actually did a half ironman about a month before I found out we were going to be parents for the first time. During my pregnancy I pretty much gave up running. Call it laziness and extreme fatigue my first trimester and a small twinge of fear that running would harm the baby, but whatever it was called I basically gave up my exercise routine. I gained more weight than I wanted during my pregnancy (~40 lbs) and lost some of it after delivery, but I'm still sitting on 25-30 lbs that I want back off. Even though everyone told me breastfeeding would drop the weight quickly, here I am still BFing at 11 months post partum and I've sat at the same weight I was 2 weeks after I delivered! Since my DS was born getting back to running/working out has been a struggle. I was back at work at 3 months and my DH and I have different work schedules. I go into work early (leave around 6 am) and get home around 4-5 pm where he leaves at 8:30-9 am and doesn't get home until around 7:30-8 pm. It's been hard to workout after work since I'm limited to running with our BOB stroller, but it's south Texas and it's 90-100 degrees out until 8 pm and I don't want DS out in that weather for long. Putting aside all the excuses, I'm now ready to get back into shape. Until 12 months of age, I'm stuck with the monstrous boobs which I've never had to deal with before (think double bras if running). I actually got myself out this AM and ran before work and it felt good. So good in fact that I signed up for a half marathon in Feb. The year I got pregnant, I did 3 half marathons, so I know I can run this distance (albeit not fast).
Maybe with having people to chat with will help keep me motivated and on track.

WOW! i hear you on not shedding the pounds while BFing, i only BFed for a few months but didn't find it helpful at all. Anywho -- yes, please come chat with us - the more the merrier!

Welcome Dazeepetals! I didn't lose breastfeeding either. I got out there today, but only did 1 1/2 mi. My energy is lacking this week. I need to get back in the groove. Hopefully getting the kids back to school tomorrow will help!

You have an amazing resume - we may seem a little slow for you when you get back up to speed, as it were. We are great about offering support, however, and will see you through your upcoming half! I'm cursed to have to run with double bras and I can guarantee that there is no breast-feeding to blame it on. I have been having daydreams of breast reduction while running lately. Be thankful that you should hopefully have lost some boobage by your half. I can't wait to continue to hear about your progress - this really is a nice place to help you hold yourself accountable.

I got my run in yesterday morning. The highlight was when a man's tiny Chihuahua puppy got away from him and proceeded to chase me. The thing was about the size of a squirrel and one of the cutest things I've ever seen. That guy better watch out---if it happens again I may grab that baby and keep running. I probably won't be getting any time to run again until tonight. I have to help out the PTO with school registration today, so I don't have much time this morning. Have a good day, all!

It is a beautiful day out here! Low humidity and relatively pleasant. I got my 4.10 in after a 2 mile dog walk, so I've met my step goal for the day already.

Kymberlee - Good for you on powering through the track workouts. I'm scared of the track, so I avoid it even though I'm sure it would be useful for me. dazeepetals - Welcome - glad to have you here! MaryPea - glad your ankle is feeling better! janeliz - I've been chased by big scary dogs before - I would be happy to be chased by a chihuahua! elaine - Sounds like a great start to the day today! I got my 4 miles in this morning. Nothing special, but it sure is a pretty day and it was nice to be outside. I'm starting to feel like it might be time for new sneaks, though. And I know that this thread isn't about nutrition/eating, but I have got to get myself back on track. Running can only burn off so many calories. Gah! Maybe if I say it here I'll be more willing to make better choices.

I went for my second run with my new run group yesterday and was shocked to see my Nike app say I now run at a 9 min mile because when run by myself it says I run at a 11 min mile, must be all my walking breaks! Yoki - I know what you mean!

wow, we are getting some miles in...yay us!!
I did 3 miles and something this morning...but my big win was yesterday i found FIVE perfectly good sports bras in my closet. I had been thinking about buying a few more to round out the workout wardrobe so that i'm not doing laundry 2x per week just to have clean workout clothes. Now all i need is a couple more pairs of Thorlos and i'm set.

The weather here today was amazing! Low humidity, and that almost never happens. I ran late, about 6:00 pm as I got in a long trail ride today and missed my usual early evening hour. Got in a good 5 miles. I almost never run this late out here, especially on a Friday. The whole world was having a cook-out and I got the farmer's hello from a jillion people.

I got up early and my brother and I ran 8 miles. Well, 8 for me and 7 for him. We are doing a half soon and he has not trained at all! Lets just say, he was a little sore after the run. Plus, the 88 degree weather is a killer! Definitely slows my pace down. Next weekend, going to start running at 5am before the sun comes up!

I skipped a long run this morning. My hip has been a little sore & I thought it would be a good idea to baby it a little. Then I spent the day walking around a water park which was fun. Great job candygurl & MaryPea!

Hello everyone. I had a great week last week walking 34 miles including a good hike to a summit to end the week.
Unfortunately I will have little to no milage this week as my father passed away Sunday and I have been in Salt Lake clearing out his room at assisted living with my brother and sister-in-law. My husband wanted me to walk in the mornings but I was staying 45 miles away with a cousin and just wanted to sleep when I could. The hardest part was dealing with all the sympathy and comments about how nice my father was when he wasn't very nice to me.
Home now surrounded by kittens who missed me and preparing for our hiking vacation that starts next Tuesday.
I love over hearing about all your successes and welcome to the new commenters.

pb, I am so sorry about your loss. May your father's memory be eternal. Sometimes taking care of our mental health is far more important than physical exercise. I think that getting sleep when you could was the best thing you could do.

I walked 3 miles tonight which was a good for me night. Loved the hilly parts. They were the best. I talked to my BFF the entire time while panting on the steep hills and it was great. Can't wait to do it again tomorrow night!
