Hello everyone. I had a great week last week walking 34 miles including a good hike to a summit to end the week. Unfortunately I will have little to no milage this week as my father passed away Sunday and I have been in Salt Lake clearing out his room at assisted living with my brother and sister-in-law. My husband wanted me to walk in the mornings but I was staying 45 miles away with a cousin and just wanted to sleep when I could. The hardest part was dealing with all the sympathy and comments about how nice my father was when he wasn't very nice to me. Home now surrounded by kittens who missed me and preparing for our hiking vacation that starts next Tuesday. I love over hearing about all your successes and welcome to the new commenters. very sorry about your loss, pb.

I walked 3 miles tonight which was a good for me night. Loved the hilly parts. They were the best. I talked to my BFF the entire time while panting on the steep hills and it was great. Can't wait to do it again tomorrow night! I used to like walking alone but the time goes by so much faster with people! Good job!

pb, so sorry for your loss.
Good luck to all those running/walking a half soon! What a great goal.
I did week 4 day 1 of my couch to 5k today ( almost halfway there!) and went out on a trail that has some gentle inclines. More of a challenge than I bargained for! LOL Even a small incline makes a big difference to me. But I did it! Today's total run/walk was 34 minutes and 18 of that was running (jogging).
I'm even slower than I thought, though - the part of the trail I did during that time was only 1.6 miles.

^^^^^ That was my view on my run today. Heavenly! 9 miles with most of it at least 100 feet from the waters edge.
I have a couple questions for everyone...
1) Do you cross train at all? Other than walking... I've been thinking about adding some biking. I normally swim about 1/2 mile after my runs but those are on the back burner until the gym/swim center has completed their yearly drain and clean hootenanny...
2) Do you find a discrepancy between what you think you're running, time wise, and what reality is? I use a couple of different devices and training programs depending on how I feel. My GPS (Garmin) and the GPS on my SOLO trainer, often are slightly off on MPH. Today, my SOLO clocked me at 6.2 MPH!!! I don't run that fast. WTH?

Anna*Banana, I have great intentions to cross train, and will manage a yoga/pilates class during the week and possibly a bike ride (road or mountain) on the day I don't run. I feel like I could do more, though. When I am in the middle of training for a race, I feel like all my energy is focused towards the race. I really should pay more attention to cross training, but it doesn't happen as often as it should. I got up EARLY this morning and ran my 20K race. It was so hard as the course had tons of "false flats" and had a gradual uphill the first part of the race. I was looking forward to the run back, but my feet and legs were screaming in agony because the declines were making me land much harder on the trail. Ugh! My finish time was slower than I wanted, but I finished and got my medal. I am super sore right now, though. I'm rethinking the rest of my training plan for the remainder of the time until my half marathon (3 weeks). I wanted to get a couple more long runs as well as short runs and speed work during the week, but I am thinking I might bag the long runs and just do some 6-8 milers on the weekend and short, easy miles during the week. I'm not sure if the long runs are going to help much at this point, and my feet are pretty beat up right now. I want to hit the half healthy and ready to kill the course. Thoughts?

Be careful walking/running in broken down shoes. If I wear shoes that are just past 300 miles, my PF and tendonitis flare up horribly and it takes weeks to feel better.

I hang my head in shame - I didn't get any running in at all this week. Did heavy cardio twice, but no running. *sigh* Love this thread and seeing all your progress - keeps me going! I don't know how to tag anyone, but wanted to say how sorry I am about PB's dad.
Alrighty then, tomorrow is a new day with a new week. Training has to start for my 10K on Nov. 1. Hope we all have good weeks!

I really needed to get a long run in this weekend, but only managed to squeeze in time for 3.5 today. Sigh. Summer is so hard on training with my kids out of school - it can be next to impossible to get out of the house for a good chunk of time. Kymberlee, I think that taking it easy, 3-6 mile runs, until your upcoming half is the way to go, especially if your feet are feeling beaten up. Give your body some time and space to heal, while keeping your fitness level by steady training. Good for you for finishing that 20 K, even though it was hard. Hills are a b&tch!

pb - So sorry for your loss. My father died a long time ago, but we had a difficult relationship that I spent a long time not thinking about. I'm finding my time out running to be very good in helping me to work through some of my issues/feelings. It seems like it's a good time to think without thinking and let go of some stuff. I hope you enjoy your hiking trip! Tearisci - I'm excited to hear about your race! Good luck these last two weeks of training! Delta Dawn - It's amazing how much faster those miles can go when you're distracted by talking to someone else! Merge - Great job on making it to week 4 of C25K! Even just a little hill can be way more effort, so good for you on conquering that hill! anna*Banana - What a gorgeous view for a run! I don't think strength training counts as cross training (right?) and that's the only other thing I do. Lots of body weight exercises to try to keep my arms, core, and legs toned & happy. Good luck to you & elaine for your last few weeks of training before your half! Kymberlee - I would want to make it to the start line of my half ready to run healthy, so if you feel like you need to back off, I think it's a wise choice. You've put in the miles and won't suffer from taking it easy but you could definitely suffer from pushing too hard. @oldpeanewname - That's a great pace to keep up for 3 miles! I think I need new shoes, too, but I'm kind of dreading shopping for them because I know they recently changed my favorite style. I'm really hoping it's similar, but sometimes the littlest changes make a big impact on how they feel. atomicdog - Some weeks are just like that. No shame! I hope you can get in some miles this week. New thread for this week coming up!
