Warning: Every single year, something happens at Thanksgiving. It's cursed. I'm whining, I know I'm whining and the gist of this is that I got a cold but I wanted to vent. There are many, many people with far worse problems. I have worse problems, but I still wanted to whine. So here goes...
When I worked full time, I loved having 4 days off in a row. The day after Thanksgiving was our Veteran's Day holiday so it was the only time per year that you got 4 consecutive days off unless you used vacation. But other than that I never cared for the holiday.
The sentiment is lovely. Be thankful. Yet, it becomes at least for the cook in the family all about fixing the prescribed meal of turkey, dressing, etc. I don't like any of it! I'll eat sweet potatoes but I fix all that other stuff for 3 other people and then deal with the leftovers. So a few years ago, I said 'enough' and started fixing a regular nice meal of chicken, roast beef, anything but turkey and dressing. This year my parents wanted to go out. I was having a minor medical procedure on Tuesday so I said, sure, why not? (The procedure went fine.)
Yesterday, we went to a local cafeteria. We passed many restaurants on the way but only 2 others were open and they were all packed. We got there at 11:20 a.m. and stood in line a solid hour. The food was so salty I drank water all afternoon while I baked my husband his annual pumpkin pie.
But no matter, Thanksgiving day was over and I could enjoy a visit from my BFF who works full time and gets to visit this area only on holidays. She was supposed to come in for a visit in October but Hurricane Matthew changed the plan so I haven't seen her in several months. Then at 3:00 a.m. I woke with a sore throat. It's getting worse and she won't be coming. I can't blame her a bit. Who wants to go home for the holidays and take a cold back with them? She has her own elderly parents to think of. Yet, I'm so disappointed. I decorated the house, we were planning to craft and chat the afternoon away. I made a lovely chocolate cream pie. So much of my life is spent dealing with parent stuff that her visits or my visits to her are such a nice way to get away from family obligations for awhile.
Every single year it is something. One year I bought a mattress right before Thanskgiving and was sore the whole weekend. One year, Mother fell and broke her wrist the night before Thanksgiving so we spent all night in the emergency room.
So that is my whiny vent...I hope you are all having happy, healthy holidays.
