Anyone else using this sad situation in discussions with kids? We've been talking with DS about how the Kevin's (apparent) emotional response put him in harm's way. And also how Tony's reputation is making some think he intentionally swerved or even intentionally hurt him.
We've even covered random bystanders videos...

Hmmm, that's a tough one. At age 7, my son is too young for those chats. He is at his Dad's house this week so I'm not even sure he knows what happened. They typically watch the NASCAR races though.
I think you've covered the main lessons. I'm not sure what else there would be to add, other than Tony showed the proper respect by not racing the next day and not racing this weekend (not sure if/when he will return).

We did, well, I did. DS (10.5) came and said "did you hear Tony Stewart hit and killed someone" with a tone that was as if Mr. Stewart had run him down in cold blood. We spoke first about how TV and Social Media will spin stuff and it's not for us to judge and I walked him through a bit of what happened- Another driver was ticked and got out of his car...and so on. He seemed to think much differently of the situation at that point.
I then transitioned it to him and life on the soccer field (and with his sister, or friends...) and how tempers can flare and it is a bad thing and how you have got to keep it in check or bad things- things you don't even consider- can happen as a result. There is no way Kevin Ward, in the midst of his emotional flare up, considered that his last minute on earth would be chasing down Tony Stewart. You have got to realize that anger, or any emotion really, clouds logic and you have to be sure of that enough to temper your reactions.
I didn't hear about the issue and come up with a game plan, it came up organically and I took the chance to just talk to my boy. Now, LJ is a pretty mild kid but get him in net with gloves on and he becomes a bit more cocky and angry if/when situations don't go his way.
