How often do you replace your cutting boards?

I've had the same one for years. It's acrylic and has a lip that sits on the edge of the counter. I love that thing.

Never, apparently, since I've had the same ones for years. I hear you're supposed to, because germs can linger in the cracks, but I just run them through the dishwasher to sanitize.

When they get lots of cuts. I have about 5 and run through the dishwasher after each use.

Depends on the type. I have a bunch of those thin flexible ones, they get tossed if they get too ratty. I have one that a guy in one of DH's leagues made for me out of the sink hole cutout of a Corian countertop, it's awesome and barely shows any wear after years of use.

I Googled it and see they sell them on Amazon. Mine is 15x14. I also have a really long white one from Pampered Chef (I think) that has a *well* around the edge to catch juices from cooked meats.

Every few years when they get really cut up. I mostly use thin flexible ones.

I'd guess every 3-4 years. The plastic ones I have get smelly after a while, no matter what I do...
I try to color code them so I use white ones for onions, garlic and brightly colored ones for veggies/fruit/anything that's not raw meat and doesn't have a strong smell. Separate ones for meat.

I have two Boos blocks. The larger one is over 10 years old and I can't imagine replacing it. The smaller one I just bought this year. I keep them oiled and plan to use them for decades.

I love my plastic cutting boards ... I do have one that is pretty much designated for meat/poultry only though ... but with two teens in the house they use whatever is handy

A couple of years ago I sprung for a huge John Boos maple one, but it so big, and sometimes doesn't fit the bill to be moved around. I just had a plastic one go out on me a few months ago and I bought one of these. Really great, color coded for meat, fish, veggies and fruit, and you can put in the dishwasher.

My favorite wooden one was handmade for me by a dear friend who is now deceased. I've used it for 18+ years now and probably always will. It makes me smile to think of him every time I use it.
I have acrylic ones I use for meat.

I've had my wooden one for about 7 years. I only use is for fruits and veggies or cooked foods. Raw meat is cut on plastic. The plastic go thru the dishwasher to sanitize. I wash the wood one with soap occasionally and oil a few times a year. I'm hoping it lasts forever.

I finally splurged and got a Boos board thanks to a gift card from the in-laws to Williams-Sonoma. I don't imagine it will need replacing for a very long time. I just make sure to take care of it as instructed. Now, I do buy those plastic flexible ones from the Dollar Tree for raw chicken and pork products. Those get throuwn out and replaced as they need to be.

When they break. I've had a couple of wooden boards for 30+ years that are used daily. They are sanitized with salt and lemon regularly and I know DH uses bleach on them after cutting meat. My mom had the thin sheets and a few acrylic boards, but I've always preferred using wood. SaveSaveSaveSave

My plastic ones get replaced every couple of years when they start looking worse for wear. My Boos block is three years old and still looks great. I'll hang onto that baby as long as possible!

Only in the years I get a divorce apparently. The ones I had pre divorce I'd had since early marriage. A large wooden one my father in law made for me and a few acrylic ones I'd been given for gifts. After our divorce I've accumulated a few acrylic ones that I"ve had for about 10 years now. And a couple of large glass ones (they dull knives very quickly) that I use to protect my counter tops from the deep fryer and cork pot.

I prefer wooden cutting boards to plastic. I bought a great thick maple cutting board (not Boos) from Amazon a couple of years ago. I love that thing! It's starting to split though already so it looks like I should have bought a Boos board after all. When it does split that's what I'll do.
I don't put it in the dishwasher. I wash it off with hot water and a paper towel (we only but veggies and fruit on it-no meat in this house). I need to condition it-something I keep forgetting to do-probably why it's cracking.
I even have the product to do it. I think tonight I'll set it out on the counter so I will see it and remember to do it finally.

What do y'all use to oil or condition your wood boards? A food grade mineral oil is generally the recommended oil. YOu can get it at a kitchen specialty store. Follow that with an application of "creme" made from beeswax to coat it. Again, look for something that is labeled as food grade so you know it hasn't been in contact with contaminants.

Thanks. Now I don't feel so bad that I went out and bought 2 new cutting boards to replace a couple that I had. I think I need to look into those Boos boards. It appears to be a favorite. :-)

I'm currently using a set of plastic ones from Ikea which are a set of 3. Supposed to use a different color for meat, veggies etc. I run mine through the dishwasher so it doesn't really matter. Like most others, I replace when they start to look ratty. Alternating between the three I'm sure I will be able to go longer before replacing them.
