At the end of September I was walking my dog and felt a shin splint on my left leg. I wasn't running, just walking fast I get them sometimes but they resolve themselves in a few hours or a day or so.
This one is still hurting me. Two months later. I've seen a doctor twice, had x-rays (no stress fracture) and am on my third week of physical therapy. There is some swelling in my ankle, usually at the end of the day. There is some pitting edema too. In PT, they have me do stretching exercises and they massage the area. There is one spot (where the therapist said the muscle attaches to the shin) and if she pushes on it while massaging it, it hurts like hell. Like about bring tears to my eyes, jump off the table hurt like hell.
It is NO better! I walk with a limp and if I overuse it, I will have throbbing and stabbing pain at that site.
I'm wondering now if there isn't a problem with a vein or something. I feel like I'm wasting my time and money in PT. And I'm sick of pain with every step I take.
Please diagnose me!!
Cindy.

I would be giving the physio the flick and going back to the Dr for further investigation.
I would think that that such extreme pain when your leg is touched that there is something not quite right there.

I was thinking the same...go back to the orthopedic specialist and describe the pain during therapy.

I think it's time for an MRI to figure out what is going on. You will have a clearer idea after the scan.

Is it warm to the touch? Do you have varicose veins? You may be right to be concerned about a vein and need an ultrasound to rule out a blood clot. If blood is pooling in your ankles there are compression socks that can help, but I wouldn't do that on your own without guidance from a doctor. If you haven't seen your regular GP, I'd rewind and go there. Specialists tend to see things through the lens of their specialty.
Good luck, I hope you get some relief soon.

I wonder if a sports medicine consult might be a good idea? Sometimes I think you just need a new set of eyes and a different perspective.

Are they doing anything else in PT? US? Estim? Ice massage? What does the PT say when they hit the spot and it's that tender? Have you seen an ORTHO vs a GP?

I have only seen my pcp. He wanted me to do therapy which I am ONLY doing so that he will send me for further testing. At PT all I do are some stretching exercises and the therapist massages my shin area. I have seen no improvement at all.

Have you talked to your PT and told them this? that it is NO better?! PTs can't help you, unless you tell us. I would think they may try some other types of modalities.

You don't have a diagnosis. You've been getting PT addressing symptoms and not the cause.
I didn't see mention of anti-inflammatories, which sound like something you might benefit from, but at this point, you really need to see someone more specialized than your PCP.

Yes I have been on anti inflammatory meds too. And I have told PT that there is no change.
I'm going to cancel PT and make another appointment with my pcp and at least have them order an ultrasound.
