Hello all, I know we have some ladies on here that are super knowledgeable about electronic die cutters so I'm hoping someone might have the answer to my question.
I created something in Adobe Illustrator and wanted to use it in Silhouette Studio. I don't have the designer edition so I figured the best way to do that was to save the file as a PNG and trace it in Silhouette Studio. When I did that, the file traced all wonky (meaning it did not follow the lines of the design, instead it bulged out in different places and didn't capture the details of the design). Is there a certain way I should save PNGs to import them? Or am I doing it all wrong to start with?
Any advice would be really appreciated. Thank you! |

Are you just trying to cut around the outline of the design or make a paper piecing out of it?

I use the trace feature with png files all the time in the Silhouette software usually without any problem - but I don't use Illustrator and I have the Designer Edition. I can open the png file in the Designer Software without any issues. I'm wondering if somehow the basic version doesn't allow you to bring a png file into the software as "cleanly" and that's why you're not getting good cut lines.

crazy4scraps, I'm trying to trace around the outline. It's just words but when I use the font in Silhouette Studio, I can't use glyphs (at least I don't think I can) like I can in Illustrator.
streetscrapper, I could be wrong but I don't think it's a difference between the designer and regular version. I can trace other PNGs just fine (for example, ones from Studio Calico digital files) so I think it has something to do with the settings I'm using to create the PNGs. |

Depending on how complex you want the outline to be, it might be simpler and quicker to hand trace the outline you want instead of trying to do it automatically. I don't have a Silhouette but I do have two different Pazzles machines that use Funtime and a Silver Bullet that uses SCAL, and I'm pretty sure I can hand trace in both of those, so I'd be pretty confident that it should be something you could do in any version of Silhouette Studio as well. I just use the line tool or the freehand tool to draw lines around the image I want to trace, connect the nodes and refine the lines with the move point tool. When I have an image that's difficult to auto trace, it's usually much quicker to hand trace than to try to clean up a mess. If you Google it, you should be able to come up with a few different YouTube videos on how to do it in your software. Also, Illustrator is a vector based program, I thought you should be able to import anything created with that right in, or am I mistaken on that? I'm fairly certain I can import AI files into both of my cutting software programs. ETA: Does your software have a WYSIWYG feature? That would be another way around it as long as the design is black and white with crisp edges. |

If it is "just words" and a you want an outline only, can you use the offset feature to create your cut lines?
I am on a mac and I access my glyphs in Font Book and then copy and paste them into the Silhouette Software. Sorry, not C saucy, but can you do the same thing? Maybe google "getting font glyphs into silhouette" and find information - that is how I learned about Font Book.
