I write, edit and assemble a monthly newsletter. For free as a volunteer thing. This is my 2nd year. Last year I enjoyed it. This year... ugh. No one will answer my emails (you would think they would want their events in the newsletter...), I can't get any one to proof read, it's basically the same thing over and over (come to this thing, join this association, thank you for going to our programs), and I don't think anyone reads the newsletter anyway. Oh and I can only print copies, I'm not allowed to send it by email...don't get me started on that drama.
I am seriously considering retiring at the end of the year, but I know no one else is going to step up.
I think the bad weather and not being appreciated has been wearing on me.
Off to finish writing the newsletter no one reads...
End of vent.

Go ahead and retire from it!
Passive aggressive me, would put it in teeny tiny print in the middle of the letter.

Go ahead and retire from it! Passive aggressive me, would put it in teeny tiny print in the middle of the letter. There is this one section that is supposed to highlight a different in the group every month. There are 10 main people and 10 newslettters...perfect except I can't include that feature this month because no one will answer the questions (there are only 5-6 questions and most of them are fun/goofy), I am seriously considering putting in a notice that this feature has been canceled due to a lack of participation and leaving a big blank box where that item usually goes...

Do it. Making people feel like an asshole actually works sometimes. Peer pressure from other people, spouses, friends saying "why didn't you answer the simple 5 questions" will make them feel like an ass. And they'll probably apologize. If not, then no one cared anyway!

What if you take a month off right now, and cut back on the amount of newsletters until you retire? It is crazy that you can't email it out.....waste of a tree.

It is crazy it can't be done via email. I am the newsletter lady for our astronomy club, so I totally feel your pain. I have one man who requires that I print him a copy. I do it for him because he is 80 or more and has done a whole heck of a lot for the club since its inception in the 50s.
But it always amazes me the people that want stuff in the newsletter the day AFTER it is published (monthly)

Skip a month. You'll see who actually notices.
BTW I'm sorry you do all this without appreciation. That sucks.

I combined December and January into one newsletter (slow time of year) so I will have next month off. I should have squeezed November-December together so I wasn't writing the thing on Thanksgiving weekend... The no emailing thing is really dumb, but I'm done with the drama of trying to get it changed. And yes to the person who mentioned last minute additions. Usually it happens about 10 minutes after I make copies...every month.

We used to have a monthly newsletter at work... last year it switched to quarterly... i think 2 more pages n basically the same info... maybe you could do that if you don't want to completely stop... if you do want to retire from it then just do.... im sure some people will miss it...
Im sorry ur feeling unappreciated

If it's a volunteer activity that's not bringing anything positive to your life anymore, don't feel bad about moving on. Notify your group that you're stepping down at whatever point you determine and put an ad for a new editor in the space where the feature no one bothered to answer for you would have gone.

If no one participates, I say retire. Someone will step up or not. It's not your problem.
ETA - What would happen if you just decide to email it without approval? They fire you? Go for it.
