Ugh! I'm trying to rent a car from Nashville airport for five days, and the prices are really high. I just need the car to get to and from the airport to my Mom's house in KY. I hate to spend a bunch of $$$ when the car will sit in the driveway all week. I have tried to get a shuttle but that is difficult due to the area where my mom lives. So, anyone have car rental secrets they would like to share???

Rental car offices located away from the airport typically have better prices. Can you take a shuttle from the airport to city center and rent from an office located in city center??

Is there a bus that can get you closer? Then taxi?
As for rental tips, if you have AAA, belong to a union, Costco, Sams, etc, that can help. Look for coupons. I think priceline and those types of things do cars, too.

How long a drive is it? Is ride sharing an option?

Even going from a car rental place off-site from the airport won't help much in certain cities. Nashville is an expensive place to rent a car.
I need a car in Memphis for 5 days and it was going to be over $500. Yikes. Sometimes it just sucks!

There is a shuttle but would still leave me about an hour from where I need to be. Taxi is a no go. The drive is from Nashville to a little town in KY which is about 2/2.5 hours. I tried USAA but the discount was pretty minimal. I will try Costco.

I have better luck with Costco. It also helps to keep checking back as you get closer to your trip. I will book a car and watch it on Costco. Make a new reservation and cancel my old one when I see a good enough price drop.

I find that, generally, the cost varies by city. For example, I was recently in San Jose for 2 days and LA for 4. My rental in SJ cost 3 times what my rental in LA did. I spent a lot of time trying to find cheaper car rentals in SJ, but it wasn't possible. I wonder if the fact there is simply way more competition in LA amongst car rental agencies, so the prices are lower. I will also note that I found playing around with pick up times could seriously affect the cost. In a wave of illogic, it actually cost LESS in SJ to return the car later than I intended -- when booking online. The weird thing is that the cost I was quoted online was X. When I picked the car up, it was X-25% and when I returned it, they took another 10% off of that for "early return". Go figure. It's a crapshoot!
I have also found that my supposed AAA discount at Hertz is worth bupkus. I have yet to find any city in which Hertiz is not the most expensive by a LOT, so a discount on a LOT isn't helpful.

I also found it varies by airport. I am heading to Southern California at the end of the month. It would be $300 to rent a compact car from the Orange County airport for 4 days, but only $86 for a full-sized car from LAX for the same 4 days. I decided to fly in and out of LAX.
Search online for coupon codes.

Use smaller companies when possible. I've started using Firefly. I LOVE them and they're super cheap!

Bid on Priceline...lowball 'em and go from there. I've always had very good luck with them.

You may try looking into a car service like Uber, Lyft or Sidecar. Not sure they would be in the smaller cities in KY but it's worth a shot. If you're using a debit card, around here, Enterprise wanted a utility bill plus some other stuff like a pay-stub. Also, no AAA discount with them and they wanted a bigger deposit than Hertz. Went with them instead. They offer a AAA discount and none of this paperwork stuff.

My upcoming rental - $21.50 per day for a full-size is with Avis, btw. So there are deals to be found with larger companies too.

Have you tried hotwire.com? I find good deals with them frequently and the price goes down the closer you get to the trip. They used to let you make a reservation without paying but now you have to pay up front. That part sucks because I used to keep creating a new reservation each time the price dropped and then cancel the old reservation. That isn't as easy now since you have to pay. Also, once I sign up and search, I start getting their emails letting me know when there is a price drop.

You are probably out of luck trying to find a reasonable rental price out of Nashville. I live in Ky and was wondering what city you were looking to go to? Not that I can really help but you just never know.

Not that I can really help but you just never know. I'm going to Cadiz which is near Hopkinsville; about an hour north of Clarksville. Thanks for for the ideas, Ladies. It sounds like I'm just gonna have to suck it up.

I went to Portland for Mother's day weekend and I used priceline. A minivan was only $24/day. I didn't have to pay upfront either.
