I am so thankful that the attacker was taken down relatively quickly. My prayers are with the injured and their families.

This was awful - we have friends whose DD just started there this year. She posted that she was able to get off campus and is safe/fine. Terrifying.

Just starting to make sense of this. Dd called to tell me about the active shooter alert at OSU. She was safe and sound in her apartment downtown, not near campus. But, she was getting many texts, group texts from friends on campus. An acquaintance, a friend of her boyfriend, was hit by a car. I thought that made zero sense with an active shooter alert. This friend is OK from what she said. I gave her the usual speech about misinformation so close to the time of the event as I thought it made no sense and couldn't be related. Looks like it was directly related after all. I'm also not seeing anything about a gun. The friend reported a "big knife," which sounds more like the news stories I am reading now. I imagine I will hear more once dd is out of rehearsals and can catch up on the texts.

Supposedly three people have been shot. 😢 Copying and pasting hosschicks latest update: Local news is now reporting that the suspect was alone and was killed by a university cop within less than a minute of the attack. He was armed with a butcher knife; those injured were either hit by his vehicle or stabbed, no life-threatening injuries. Thank you to the brave LEO who took him down. Thank goodness there were no fatalities, how scary!

So grateful it was handled. I have to say the news was a little frustrating today, they were interviewing a student that was right there and he was like 'I don't want to spread misinformation or make moms worry more than they already are, I didn't see or hear a gun at all' they almost seemed pissed that his story wasn't bigger and he was being sensible. The media frenzy around these type of disasters makes me ill sometimes, like they are frothing at the mouth. The song, "Dirty Laundry" (Don Henley's version) plays in my mind every time.

I'm copying the news article as it exists.
BREAKING:
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A U.S. official has identified the suspect in the Ohio State attack that injured nine people as a man of Somali descent.
The official identified Abdul Razak Ali Artan as the now-deceased suspect. He was born in Somalia and living in the United States as a legal permanent resident. It was unclear when Artan came to the U.S.
The official wasn't authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
A second law enforcement official confirmed that authorities believe the suspect's name is Abdul Artan. That official also wasn't authorized to publicly discuss details of the ongoing case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Authorities say the suspect was shot to death Monday by a police officer after driving up onto a curb and into pedestrians and attacking people with a knife.
EARLIER:
COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man plowed his car into a group of pedestrians at Ohio State University and then got out and began stabbing people with a butcher knife Monday morning before he was shot to death by a police officer, authorities said.
Nine people were hurt, one critically, and police said they were investigating the possibility it was a terrorist attack. The FBI and other agencies joined the investigation.
The details emerged after a morning of confusion and conflicting reports that began with the university issuing a series of tweets warning students that there was an "active shooter" on campus near the engineering building and that they should "run, hide, fight." The warning was apparently prompted by what turned out to be police gunfire.
Numerous police vehicles and ambulances converged on the 60,000-student campus, and authorities blocked off roads. Students barricaded themselves inside offices and classrooms, piling chairs and desks in front of doors.
Ohio State Police Chief Craig Stone said that the assailant deliberately drove over a curb outside a classroom building and that an officer who was nearby because of a gas leak arrived on the scene and shot the driver in less than a minute.
Angshuman Kapil, a graduate student, was outside the building when the car barreled onto the sidewalk.
"It just hit everybody who was in front," he said. "After that everybody was shouting, 'Run! Run! Run!'"
Student Martin Schneider said he heard the car's engine revving.
"I thought it was an accident initially until I saw the guy come out with a knife," Schneider said, adding that the man didn't say anything when he got out.
The identity of the attacker was not immediately released.
Asked at a news conference whether authorities were considering the possibility it was a terrorist act, Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs said: "I think we have to consider that it is."
In recent months, federal law enforcement officials have raised concerns about online extremist propaganda that encourages knife and car attacks, which are easier to pull off than bombings.
The Islamic State group has urged sympathizers online to carry out attacks in their home countries with whatever weapons are available to them.
In September, a 20-year-old Somali-American stabbed 10 people at a St. Cloud, Minnesota, shopping mall before being shot to death by an off-duty officer. Authorities said he asked some of his victims if they were Muslim. In the past few years, London and other cities abroad have seen knife attacks blamed on extremists.
The shelter-in-place warning was lifted and the campus declared secure after about an hour and a half, after police concluded there was no second attacker, as rumored.
At least two people were being treated for stab wounds, four were injured by the car and two others were being treated for cuts, university officials said.
The attack came as students were returning to classes following the Thanksgiving holiday break and Ohio State's football victory over rival Michigan that brought more than 100,000 fans to campus on Saturday.
Rachel LeMaster, who works in the engineering college, said a fire alarm sounded on campus.
"There were several moments of chaos," she said. "We barricaded ourselves like we're supposed to since it was right outside our door and just hunkered down."
LeMaster said she and others were eventually led outside the building and she saw a body on the ground.
Classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
The initial tweet from the university's emergency management department went out around 10 a.m. and said: "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College."
Ohio State President Michael Drake said the active-shooter warning was issued after shots were heard on campus.
"Run, hide, fight" is standard protocol for active shooter situations. It means: Run, evacuate if possible; hide, get silently out of view; or fight, as a last resort, take action to disrupt or incapacitate the shooter if your life is in imminent danger.

I listened to the President of the university's press conference and he said that they hold an annual active shooter/disaster response drill. It sounds like it really paid off today. I was awfully impressed with the law enforcement's response. As a mother of a couple of kids who are off in the world, I pray that their universities are as well prepared.

So glad to hear the Somali shooter is now dead. He was dead less than a minute after it all started. Of course, the media doesn't get any mileage out of that kind of story so the headlines said "ACTIVE SHOOTER" for at least two hours after he was confirmed dead. The BBC was reporting more accurately than any of our US news.

Doesn't surprise me that the BBC was ahead of the game. I get a lot of my news from Gar! Seriously, she knows way more about what's going on over here than I ever do.

Actually, although the actual incident was about 2 minutes long, the alert was active over 90 minutes while police were verifying there weren't more people involved.

It's looking like it's terrorist related or inspired after watching national news on ABC.

I think the reports of gun shots were all from the police gun.
Dd was getting those active shooter texts from friends. She is not an OSU student but lives nearby and has many friends who go there either part time or full time.
And, as is with the misinformation at the start. Her acquaintance was NOT hit by the car but was in the immediate area and ran as the car came at those in that area. He did not actually get hit. So much confusion as this played out.

Dd came home and said "xxxxx's Mom's Boss's daughter was one of the people he hit with his car!!" and I gently pointed out, maybe, BUT the funny thing after events like this is more people are allegedly involved than there are actual victims.
One of the things that frosted my cookies was seeing tweets from "news" accounts (i.e. the word news is in their twitter handle but they aren't truly an actual media rep) deliberately posting false info. Several of them tweeted the shooter was positioned on a rooftop and we know that is absolutely incorrect.

This is why I prefer to let things play out before rushing to judgement etc. After our run in with the news media and their posting of false information regarding my family (albeit not in a harmful way but still) I am more in the wait till everything has been done and then start watching the briefings given by the officials on scene. I just don't trust the news to be accurate in breaking stories anymore. I feel they do more harm than good trying to be the first with the best piece of information no matter if its true or not.
