My niece came to Texas, from Kansas, with her 2 children. Son Jack is a senior in HS. Around 6, another niece came to visit etc. Phyllis (niece) reported that she saw an injured owl while enroute. We called the agency which would help. They gave instructions on how to get owl in a box and said a lady would meet her at the location. Phyllis invited Jack to come with her on the adventure. "It will beat playing cards with the aunts." They left.
Upon finding the owl again, and getting in the field to catch it, they were approached by the landowner farmer who was upset about trespassers on his property. Phyllis got him settled down. The owl retreated into the grove of trees. So, in pitch darkness Jack went after the owl and did find it. Rescue lady came and owl was taken to rehab facility. Farmer said 5 owls live there. While waiting on rehab lady, Jack got to hear coyotes sing. Now, if no poison ivy rash appears on Jack, all will end well. Jack will have a story for his friends back in Kansas.
Tonight's trivia: Horned owls like to eat skunks so often smell like a skunk. If you need to catch an injured owl, get large box. Put box on its side, and use a broom to gently "sweep" the owl into the box.
Update: Niece called the rescue lady. She said the owl had some digestive issues, apparently has not eaten lately and many parasites. The owl should recover.
Photo is from the time the owl was seen alongside the road.

I am so happy to read that your niece Phyllis cared enough about this owl to do something about it. So many people would not make the effort to actually get out there and rescue the poor thing. I'm curious about the circumstances that allowed her to realize the owl was injured in the small amount of time she would have been driving past it. I am also really impressed that she did! Owls are such beautiful and interesting creatures. And it sounds like it was an exciting adventure as well as a helpful one. I love an animal rescue story.
