I know, I can google it. But I've done so much planning & research for this trip, I think I might smash my keyboard if I have to sift through one more US Parks website and/or tour guide website to get the real deal.
We're planning to go to Pearl Harbor next Sunday, the 4th. The 7th is the 75th anniversary, so it may be busier than usual. We're only staying in Honolulu one night (in Saturday afternoon, out Sunday afternoon). Was planning to leave our luggage at the bell desk at our hotel in Waikiki and Uber there/back. Flight to Maui is at 2:55 PM, Pearl Harbor opens at 7 AM and we were planning to get there around then.
Bottom line it for me: Should I suck it up and book a tour through a company so I don't have to think about anything? Or can I just show up at 7 - 7:30 AM on Sunday and see the important stuff by 11:30? Because those are my two options... making a complex plan that involves me playing tour guide is not going to happen at this point.

ON an early Sunday morning it should be pretty sparsely populated. I think you should be fine. The main thing, you can skip out at almost any point. Just watch the time between boats that come/go between land and the memorial. If you don't have enough time back you can skip going out to the memorial. The whole thing should take about 1.5 hours So you should be done by 9.

I used to just show up and wander around. The best parts are the film at the visitor center and the museum. IMO of course.

The Missouri tour is also worth going on. When you get off the highway there is a large swimming pool ~ that's where I took swimming lessons in the 50's when I was a kid. Damn near drowned. ETA: Have a blast on your vacation!! Drink a Lava Flow for me!

Whatever you do -- do NOT miss Pearl Harbor -- and go all the way out to the Memorial. It is beautiful. It is moving. It is a very emotional experience.

We did not book a tour. I was a little worried from what I read about getting tickets to go out to the memorial. We did not get there until almost 10 am on a weekday in May. It was a non-issue. You will have no problem that early.
We did the recorded tours. We actually did everything including the airplane museum. I could have easily skipped that one and don't recommend it unless you are very into airplanes in general.
I agree that you can do the important stuff in that time. You can easily do the visitor's center, go out to memorial and maybe even a bit more.

I can't offer any advice, as I've never been to Hawaii. I doubt this is an issue, but if you or your DH go in military uniform, it needs to be service dress. DH was there about a month ago. He was between meetings and wanted to visit the memorial. They wouldn't allow him to visit the site because he was in ABUs. Never mind all the civilians there in flip flops and tank tops...

I would get reservations through recreation.gov, just in case. Someone suggested skipping going out to the memorial if you run out of time, but I wouldn't do that. The memorial itself is very touching, and IMHO something everyone should see. I found it helpful to visit the museum first, to refresh my knowledge of the history of Pearl Harbor.
