I have been watching off and on and right now there is a show on ... y'all, get this ... a THIRTY FOOT GREAT WHITE.
Thirty feet. Apparently his name is Submarine. Someone named him, like a pet.
I grew up in the era of "Jaws" and even though I go to the beach all the time, I still am a bit squeamish about sharks. Usually the water is so clear, you pretty much know what is sharing the water with you-although last time I was at the beach a really really big (my son probably 5 feet) blur swam between where my mother and were floating on noodles. I said it was a ray of some sort, but my son insists it was a nurse shark-we both had polarized sunglasses, but his are better quality than mine. I prefer the ray story, and tell him to keep his negative thoughts to himself. LOL
So what do y'all think? Watching shark week? No way-if you do you will never go to the beach again?

We watched the one on Submarine last night and holy hell! That is what nightmares are made of right there!!! When it jumped out of the water and ate that guy?! I think I peed a little. LOVE Shark Week and plan on watching as much as time allows!

I watched the show on Submarine last night. Good stuff.
But please, PLEASE tell me that you do realize that this show is fake, right? These are all actors and it is all "dramatized". The boat crash in Shark Alley in South Africa never happened. The show gets more and more obviously fake as it gets to the end, but it was still fun to watch.

I have not seen it yet, but I do enjoy the Rob Lowe commercial.

Your first clue that it was fake should have been the words "dramatized". Yep, OK. They did the same thing with the mermaid show and megaladon show.
Next clue was that all of those people going out whale watching were video taping themselves. No one does that. Certainly not an entire boat full of people.
Next clue was that everyone was very attractive.
Next clue - yes there was probably a 30-footer 30 years ago, but it would have taken her 20+ years to get to that size, making her at least 50 years old today. Great whites don't live that long. Oh wait, I forgot this one has super powers and can breathe while suspended vertically (your next clue this show if full of crap).
Next clue - the whole thing was caught on tape. Yeah right.
Next clue - none of this was in the real news.
Next clue - the show gets more and more unbelievable. "Hot Spots", aka peopl, still inside the ship 40 ft. Under water in 56 degree temps? Yeah sure. They wouldn't be that hot any more. The shark ramming the cage - no one would have survived that jarring impact.
Not to mention all the bad acting.
Like I said - I thoroughly enjoyed it. But I never imagined people would ever think it was real !!!! OMG

I watched the Submarine story last night too - totally fascinating story, whatever shreds of truth may or may not be attached to it! Love shark week and look forward to it each year. Hasn't affected my beach-going but then nowadays we usually go to the lake! lol

Well...I hope it isn't real. LOL My worry is more about the great whites that they tagged and tracked into the gulf of mexico...far off the coast, but near enough to St. Pete that I don't like it one little bitty bit. I used to get all smug and superior thinking that at least we didn't have great whites. Karma baby.

DH watched last night in bed- I was asleep. This morning- 6:30am, no coffee in me yet, he goes into this HUGE dissertation all about it. He totally believed the whole thing. He actually told me he had trouble sleeping. Fast forward 2 hours, I get an email at work- they duped me! It was all fake- I looked it up, the Discovery channel lied, etc. I am cracking up at my desk. So I search "shark pictures" and email him a photo of a great white with the subject line RROOOOAAAR! Still teasing him about it.

Last year they did the search for megaladon, the prehistoric(ish) shark. It ended with a large party boat being torn in half and they could hear the people on the radio yelling shark. Yes, that did affect my comfort level snorkeling in Jamaica this year. Oy.

Now that we're back from out weekend at the beach I'm all over this!! Most crap, but some GREAT shark footage. I guess this kind of crosses over to the Guilt Pleasure TV show thread!

I purposely do not watch programs like this. Jaws all those years ago was enough for me!

But that totally should have been The Hoff instead of Rob Lowe...... No, no. Rob Lowe would be perfectly appropriate, but only is the sharks had frickin' laser beams attached to their heads. Mwaaaahaaahaaahaaaaa!!!!!!!

I purposely do not watch programs like this. Jaws all those years ago was enough for me! Same here I love Jaws and watch it over and over. But I'm not a fan of sharks or snakes, so no Anaconda or shark week for me

I turned it off because it was so fake and bad. Badly done, Discovery Channel. Should have just aired Sharknado.

We love Shark Week around here! Saving our DVRed Sharknado and Sharknado 2: The Second One for a marathon later this week. I think the names for the sharks are great- we just watched the one on "Hitler" the Hammerhead.

I love Shark Week and am so bummed that we've been too busy this year to be able to watch it so far. School starts this week, so we won't even be able to really properly enjoy it when we do get a little time to watch.
