I have searched and read the few threads that discuss the Silhouette Mint. Most of them are pretty old. Some of them, I participated in and decided the machine was not for me. Last week I changed my mind and decided to buy the Mint in spite of the downsides, because the deal on both the machines and the refills was decent. It was totally an impulse purchase.
Last night I made my first stamp. It was so easy, and now I am really excited about making more!
Buying everything for at least half off helped to offset the cost. As far as the fact that the ink colors can't be changed, I realized two things about my stamping that essentially remove that concern for me, though it wouldn't necessarily do so for everyone.
First of all, I typically stamp in black then color in with markers, so one ink color is no big deal. Second, for the stamps I would want multiple colors for, I would normally have to do that by inking the stamp with markers, which I find a total pain and hate doing. For the stamps that I want multi colored, this is a breeze. I also realized that for the stamps I would prefer to have multi colored, I would probably not be likely to feel a need to use different colors than the ones I choose the first time.
Perhaps ordering a custom stamp would be cheaper online, but the convenience of being able to whip out a custom stamp so quickly and have it for use almost immediately is really nice. I have seen many phrases that I would love to have as a stamp. Now I can make them, in my choice of fonts.
Also, when going through my Silhouette library, I now realize that I have many phrase cutting files that would be fun to use as a stamp on a card rather than as subway or wall art. Some designs would lend themselves very well to the multi-coloring, too.
All or nearly all of the negative comments about this machine here at Refupeas appeared to be from people who gave the reasons why they would not buy the machine or supplies. Cost was a big factor, but if you can buy the refill materials for half off, the cost is not nearly as bad. It's definitely better than wood mounted stamps. The crispness seems to be more a factor of how crisp the image is that you use to make the stamp. And as I said previously, the ink color(s) that last for 50 stampings is not as big of a factor for me than I thought it might be.
While the stamp sizes available are not huge, I was surprised to find how many are actually a very useful size. Now that I have every size available in hand, it will be easier to determine what sizes I will want to buy refills for. I'm not sure if the sale is still going. If it is, I may buy a few more refill sheets of specific sizes. If not, I will wait till they have another good sale on them.
All in all, I am pretty happy with this little machine.
Edited to add: Just in case anyone wonders, I am not affiliated in any way with Silhouette, nor am I rewarded in any way for saying anything about this or any other product.
