I have my company holiday party tonight and will be out pretty late, so I boarded my dog. I thought it would be nice for him to do daycare during the day today. This is the email I just got: I've only had him for about 3 weeks, so he's not super-obedient. He listens to me, but obviously he's not listening to them! We start Courteous Canine training next week, so hopefully I can take him back some time in the future. He is a german shepherd though, and I know a lot of them just like to jump fences. When I was a kid, the one next door jumped into our yard all the time. I don't even know if this is a fixable behavior. I mean, isn't like telling a lab not to fetch? Regardless, this face makes me a little less mad

Poor Fritz!! I'm learning so many "bad" behaviors are just the dog's way of coping with stress. The only way it gets better is by more exposure, but if he can't come back, that is out of the question.

Poor pup! My daughter's dog has the same fence jumping tendencies and they just put him on a close watch list. The more he goes, the better he gets.

Awww poor guy! Don't worry as he settles in and gets more comfortable with his new home and himself I'm sure he will settle down We have a GSD and she could easily clear the baby gates we have in our house, but she doesn't. She respects the boundaries and he should in time too Dang work computer, can't see his face until I get home

How short is that fence? I would expect a kennel to have a pretty high fence to keep the campers inside! Either they need a taller fence or Fritz is one talented dog! (We already know he's a cutie!)

He's super cute! I wonder if a trial run for a shorter period of time i.e. an hour or two would have worked better? Since he's only been yours for three weeks, maybe he thinks you aren't coming back. Next time will probably go more smoothly - if they let stinker butt come back.

He is sooo cute! Hopefully over time he'll be more restrained in his fence jumping. Maybe he was just trying to find you.

Mine was a jumper too when he was young. But he did learn to check for permission! So there's hope!!
Btw mine would much prefer the 'loft' they speak of and walks 1:1 with a person, as he is a special snowflake who does not consider himself a dog. He's above that you know. lol
He's a cutie

He's so cute! I feel like deja vu about dogs jumping fences. I swear this topic came up years ago! Hopefully with more training, that will help. Is there anyway they would let you come one day and help establish his boundaries?

He is super cute and I am going to approach this from a different angle - at least they are concerned enough their ability to keep him safe at this time. Imagine if he could jump and escape then get hurt or worse. I hope that after classes and a little more time that he will be able to try it again. Good luck. If I lived near you I would offer to come dog sit for you.

See that's the problem they have those faces and then ya go- ahh it's all good! Yes I think most do the jumping thing. My step dad had a german shepard while we were in HS. He was very obiedient but yes he would clear baby gates.. whatever he just didn't like being contained. My Lab/Akita girl is the same way. Both had obedience training etc.. I'm not sure what you could do except have them in an area they are comfortable. And yes a higher fence or gate. For her the hall works. Now she goes there automatically when we leave. We've only had to board it once for a few days so I don't know how she was outside but they loved her. She is a jumper but not on people. I'd love to put a go pro on her when we're not home to see how she tries.

My big guy, Harley (german shepherd) has never tried jumping a fence or safety gate. But, he will gladly push said safety gate over at any given time! He's also a bit older that Fritz. Jumping has really never been his thing, it's always been awkward for him. Getting him in our truck is a chore! LOL

Awww, he's adorable!!!
They really need to install fence roller bars at their facility. It's basically a bar that attaches to the top of the fence and it rolls so they physically CAN'T climb over the fence. They also keep predators like coyotes out of the yards. We priced them to purchase for our local animal shelter, and they were very reasonably priced and can be installed by yourself with simple tools (I think it was around 1600 dollars to do all four play yards at our shelter).

How old is Fritz? I can't believe that they expect *every* dog to be perfectly trained all the time. Was the letter more of a we don't want him at *all* or just a because he's running with scissors he can't have recess with the other kids?
Are all the dogs at the daycare fixed? German Shepherds are extremely good jumpers anyway, but when a male smells a female, they can go nutz. If the daycare is at a vet's office, the dogs could smell other dogs on the premises.
Once when I was visiting my dad, he was having to put chain link *roofs* on the runs in his kennel after a dog jumped an 8 foot high fence trying to get with a female. (because they're working dogs where genetics matter, some of the females were bred when there was enough demand) I saw him try it with my own eyes. That time it was a very gifted golden retriever (this was in the outside portion of each dog's pen--they each had pens with indoor and outdoor sleeping/exercise areas--long but not wide), but I've seen other german shepherds jump huge fences. Baby gates aren't a big deal at all to them.

I have an introverted dog, and no amount of socializing is going to make her suddenly run and play with other dogs. It kind of irritates me that trainers and boarding facilities think every dog should fit a certain mold. My dog gets plenty of opportunities for socialization...

I would chalk it up to a new family, the new environment at the daycare/boarding facility, and not being sure what's going on. I'm sure the obedience school will really help. He does get a pass for being so darn cute!

I too wonder how high the fence is. Our daycamp/kennel has 8+ higher fences. They also require that a dog have a minimum of one day at the facility one-on-one to make sure they are okay. Sometimes they recommend more than one day of one-on-one. I can't imagine you would be kicked out for the first day. I hope they will let him back. He has been through a LOT in the last few weeks. Poor guy is adjusting.

To answer some of your questions:
I was told by his foster mom that he is a fence jumper. However, her fence was pretty short, like maybe 4-5'. But he can jump straight over it at a sitting position.
I was shocked the first time I saw him jump. I had to rent a Uhaul the other day. When I was trying to put him in the truck, I thought he'd jump onto the floorboard, but no. He just straight up onto the seat which had to be at least 5' high.
We are unclear about his age. His foster mom said her vet thought he was about 3, but my vet says he's closer to 1. She said you really can't tell for sure until he gets to be about 6 because that's when their eyes start aging.
Honestly, I don't know how tall the fences are at this daycare. It never really occurred for me to look LOL! We live about 3 blocks away, and we walk past this place, so I'm sure he's like "Later guys, I'm going home now!"
He's definitely a one person dog though. He only behaves on leash with me and he looks to me for all his commands.
The daycare is not really kicking him out. They just can't have him out in "genpop" since he's constantly trying to get out. He's in his little room, and they are letting him out as needed.
I just love this dog to death though. He is just the sweetest. I just need him to behave at daycare and also to quit bothering my cat!

Ooooh my. Our heeler was uninvited from boarding because she doesn't play nice. My introvert is a heeler...it's not that she doesn't play nice she just doesn't want to play, and if they try to make her play she gets snappy. If other dogs just act like she's not there she's totally fine.

He is a pusher and just barrels into, over or through things. So the GSD is great, it's the spoiled mama's boy that has to be with me that can be a pain. He respects it about 90% of the time, but when he's feeling needy or I've been gone for too long then forget the gate
