I heard a story on NPR about how many people get released to rehab these days and how, in that stressful and time-critical situation, it's hard to "shop around" and people often choose a facility that's close to them or that's recommended by the hospital. But, that could be a big problem in that those choices may be horrible for your loved ones. What can you do? NPR noted that the government's Medicare.gov website has a nursing home comparison guide: www.medicare.gov/nursinghomecompare/search.htmlPlease do some research now and save it away just in case. Update it from time to time and then you'll be ready in an emergency, As a side note, this is the kind of data the Obama administration has done a fantastic job with both in terms of content available and in terms of making the data easy to navigate via government web sites. I worry a Trump admin, with its sycophancy of corporate interests may make this data harder to get, or may remove it completely, or may have HHS redo the ratings based on monies donated to various PACs vs. on data about patient outcomes. It may be a non-issue and I certainly hope that it is. But I can imagine a Nursing Home Corporation CEO making a call to a PAC about their one-star rated homes and what can be done about it? Hint, hint.
