We need our booster seats for our shuttle from John Wayne to the hotel and back since it's actually a 15 passenger van, not a bus. Can we gate check them? Or do we check them as cargo?

You can gate check them. If you have a good one, I'd buy a $20 one and take it.
ETA: I meant check it, not take it

We've done both on Alaska. If I remember correctly, they like you to check it with checked luggage (it's free). Then you pick it up in the over sized luggage area. Have a great trip.

Check them with checked luggage (even if you are just traveling with carry-on) so you don't have to deal with carrying it through security and around the airport before your flight. Gate check might be slightly faster on the other side, but JW is a small airport and luggage comes out quickly.

We are flying out of an even smaller airport (Bellingham, WA) and transferring in Portland. I would just hate for them not to make the flight change.

Living in Juneau, we fly Alaska Airlines ALL the time and always have to connect in Seattle to get anywhere else. Family and friends have to do the same to come see us. We've never had an issue with bags, no matter how many connections (or how many bags). I say check it and not have the hassle/struggle of carrying it around . Enjoy your trip! Valeria

Sounds like you're going to Disney. Have fun. We are!!! My kids have no idea and haven't been before!!! Our flight leaves at 6:50 am, and we're just over an hour from the airport including border crossing. We've booked a hotel near it for the night before, and will head there when the kids get out of school. DH never picks them up from school, so when they ask why Daddy is there "We're going to Disneyland!!" The early flight, even with a 2 hour layover in Portland means we arrive at JW at 12:30, so we get a good amount of time to spend in the park that day. We're there 5 nights, staying at the HoJo, and I've booked Goofy's Kitchen for the night we arrive, and Mickey's Halloween Party for the next night. All without the help of the peas.

Is it a high back booster? If it is just the base, we carry it on and put it over head or, sometimes, we can fit it in our suitcase. High back, you should definitely put it in a plastic bag and gate check it.

Being in Seattle, we fly Alaska almost exclusively and have never had a problem. It seems that anytime we venture out to another carrier (United- I'm looking at you!) everything is always messed up.
Good travel vibes to you and enjoy Disney!

I have flown Alaska almost exclusively and they've lost my checked carseat twice. My advice is to gate check it.

We love Hojo's....and Disneyland too! What an awesome surprise!! Are you bringing costumes for the Halloween party? We've never stayed at Hojo's before. I've been every 5 years or so since I was 9 (40 in 10 days!). Last time we stayed at the Clarion (too far), and before that my grandparents were big fan of Raffles. We chose Hojo's because of the proximity and the water park. Our kids are 6 and 4, so our thought is that we can go back in the afternoon for a bit. What is cooler fall weather to SoCal is summer to us, so when it gets up in the low 70's, it will be nice to be able to back and the kids can play there. We have 5 day park hoppers so we're not super rushed. We arrive at 12:30 in the afternoon on a Thursday, and fly home Tuesday morning. It's also Columbus Day weekend so it will be a bit busier, but oh well. We are bringing costumes. My youngest found a Captain America costume at Costco a couple weeks ago (yay for Marvel being Disney now! He's a super hero freak), and my oldest is going to be Anakin Skywalker. It would be amazing if he was chosen for Jedi Training Academy in it. DH and I are wearing custom Mickey and Minnie heads on crossbones tshirts.

All of the airlines at John Wayne Airport have loaners for things like car seats, boosters, wheelchairs, walkers, etc. Then they have their delivery contractor take your seat to your hotel and exchange it (usually if you leave the loaner with the front desk/bell desk, they will do the exchange for you). I know how this works because my DSO runs the delivery service at JWA. So, I'd say go ahead and check it so you aren't lugging it around, then use "plan B" if it gets misdirected and has to come to you later.

We love it here, but the natives get a little restless once in a while. (thankfully we aren't natives...) It really is a pretty place to be. And the HOJOs is quite nice.

Last time we came through the Long Beach port (cruise ship). Once we drove. Any other time we've come through LAX. I'm really looking forward to skipping the travel from LAX.

I would really recommend bringing them on the plane and putting them in the overhead compartment or under the seats. Checking the booster seats (even gate checking them) means that the seats have an unknown history because you don't know how they were handled out of your sight. It also is a way to ensure that the booster seats won't get lost or damaged. Here's a link to an article on how to safely travel with kids. Safe Air Travel

That just discusses 5 pt harnesses though. Neither of my children are in 5pt's any longer. I have one in a backless and one in a highback. They are both also too big for a CARES harness. I may convert the highback to a backless for the trip and stow them in the overhead.

None of the districts in SoCal I know of get Columbus Day off, so it shouldn't be too busy on Monday.
Going back to the hotel for a couple of hours in the afternoon is one of the best things you can do with kids this age. Have fun!
