Photographing layouts with lights

I've searched online for how people photograph their scrappy layouts and most seem to use natural daylight and stand above them, photographing them from above.  That works great for me, but since I work during the day, that only leaves the weekends to photograph layouts, and I'd really like to be able to do this at night (when I'm really working on my projects!).  Do any of you photograph your layouts at night and if so, what kind of set up do you use (lights, lightbox)?  I tried to do this a couple of nights ago, but found there was too much glare from the lights above and so I'm thinking I need to light from the sides.
