I cannot understand why Christians would want their religious holiday linked to retail sales and store profits and crass consumerism and over consumption.

"Ellen Degeneres has been featured in many JCpenny advertisements. However, the store is still Christmas-friendly."
WTF does that even mean? I can't even take that article seriously after reading that crap.

no-- I work with a variety of people and many of them do not celebrate christmas. why would I wish a jewish child merry christmas?? or judge how and what people celebrate? speaking from a town where only a minority of people attend a christian church..

I prefer "have a blessed season" Or joyous holidays.
Or merry Christmas. Or whatever I feel like at the time.
Anything really except Jesus is the reason for the season.

We say Merry Christmas, or Happy Christmas in the U.K. I don't ever recall hearing anyone say Happy Holidays over here.

To me it`s always been one sentence, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Agree with Gar about how wierd Happy Holidays sounds.

I think it's just another example of *some* American Christians being ridiculous because they think they are being "persecuted". I normally say Merry Christmas, because that's what I'm used to. I might switch to Happy Holidays this year just to annoy people.
EDIT: Gladly added 'some'. I know you're not all like that, sorry.

This whole concept annoys me. I am 65 years old and have never once had anyone ever object to any form of holiday greeting I might offer, be it Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Holidays or Happy Birthday. I just don't get the persecution complex over saying Merry Christmas.
I'm another who might start to exclusively say Happy Holidays, which to me has always been an all-inclusive way of covering all the celebratory bases, just to annoy the over-reactors. The FB shares re We Say MC are especially irritating.

Why does it matter what a stranger in a store says to you? Does it make you feel like you're somehow 'winning' if they say merry christmas?

Translation: Even though Ellen is gay, which (some) Christians are abhorrently against, we'll use her name because she because generates sales!

I work in a supermarket, and have for the past 29 years. I have always wished customers a happy holiday. This has never been a problem until a few years ago when people started getting angry and aggressively saying " MERRY CHRISTMAS " back like I did something wrong. Now, I celebrate Christmas, church and all but not everyone does. People need to find something else to freak out over.

The FB shares re We Say MC are especially irritating. You make a good point- I have never had anyone object to my greeting (I am not a practicing christian, but probably more likely to say Merry C than Happy H) or to anyone else's within my earshot. Slightly OT, I have a friend who suffered long term infertility problems, many related tragic medical events and so on. She and her husband chose not to adopt. My husband & I are childless by choice and one memorable Mothers Day weekend we went on a couples dinner date with this couple. She reacted very angrily and then dissolved in floods of tears when the waitstaff gave us roses and a happy Mother's Day wish and I had to spend a good hour with her in the ladies' room calming her down. It must be hurtful to be greeted in this way every year if this is your particular sadness in life but a homogenized holiday greeting? Pfft.

Thank goodness. Such brave Christmas heroes! A super friendly and helpful clerk at World Market told me to have a "terrific holiday" the other day, so I reached across the counter and slapped him across his Christmas hating face.

If you don't want to celebrate it, don't, just go about your normal daily living... Yes, that's exactly what a lot of people are trying to do, go about their normal daily living. Which could be why some people just say a generic "happy holidays" when they're talking to someone they don't know. People aren't mind readers and unless I know someone personally, or unless the person is wearing a star of David or a cross, I probably have no idea what they celebrate. Or if they celebrate anything. This really is just another example of a certain group of Christians trying to impose their religious beliefs on our whole society. I've never understood why it matters so much to this group. "It" being anything relating to their faith. If someone doesn't say "Merry Christmas" to me that doesn't negate the fact that I celebrate the birth of Jesus (we won't quibble about exactly *when* that birth happened though....lol). If we can't put up a Christmas tree in a public space (I know many places do, I'm talking about the ones who don't, which causes some Christians to claim persecution) that doesn't negate the fact that *I* put up a Christmas tree. If someone outright denies that Jesus is our savior that's doesn't negate the fact that *I* believe he is. Why does it matter so much for someone's faith that everyone else validate it? Sounds like perhaps that faith is kind of weak if you -- general "you" -- need so much validation from everyone around you.

Interesting that the article describes Bass Pro Shop as a gun store. Based on the flyers I get in the mail they are a hunting, fishing, camping and outdoor kind of store. We fish a LOT, and I don't recall anyone shooting the fish. Maybe we are doing it wrong?
I haven't noticed a war on Christmas. Maybe because I am too busy having a Happy Holiday?

I might switch to Happy Holidays this year just to annoy people. I am an American Christian and all I really expect is a friendly greeting of some kind. I am even OK with a head nod, maybe a smile, just acknowledge me in some way. I also don't care if God is on our money or in the Pledge of Allegience. It is not even on my radar if someone say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.

If my cashier smiles, and says "good morning", and then says "happy holidays", it makes a chore just a bit more pleasant.

Read the comments following the article. Some are, well, "interesting". I think I just got dumber by reading them. Wow is all I can say to describe them. Someone saying they would walk out without buying if the cashier didn't say Merry Christmas. Give me a break. How is that christian? ETA: someone also said if Hillary won (though of course they called her something else) that Christmas would have been history. Seriously? Isn't she Christian? Do these poeple have any idea how stupid they sound? link "10 Major Retail Stores Take A Stand And Say “Merry Christmas" Instead Of Happy Holidays This Year. Do You Support Them?" Yes, I do! Personally I say Happy Holidays. I would hope people would take it as the good meaning it has, just like when someone says Merry Christmas I take it that they are being kind and sending me good wishes. People just need something to be upset about. I did get a good laugh about them saying Bass Pro is gun friendly. Yeah, nothing puts the Christ in Christmas like weapons to kill.

This is so stupid. They chose to stop saying Merry Christmas for SALES reasons. No one made them. With the reversal, they are merely manipulating customers. Again. All decisions they make are on sales. Nothing else. Certainly not the Christ Child.

Oy fucking vey! The whole idea behind saying "Happy Holidays" is that many in the US celebrate the period that comprises Christmas and New Year's--two holidays. It's not a new thing. I've heard it since I was a kid. Christian conservatives are just getting their panties in a bunch for nothing. Jeez, people, go forth and do something constructive with your time and energy instead of wasting it on inane bullshit. You might want to ask yourselves--WWJD?
