I have a slider phone and have no intention on getting anything else. My cell phone is always off unless I need to call someone, then I will turn it on.

That pic is greatness! My mom doesn't have a smart phone and makes comments about people always having "their noses in their phones" but then she turns around and calls me to ask me if I can text her lawn guy.

still have a "dumb" phone and don't expect to upgrade anytime soon. I just don't want to pay for monthly data when I work from home where I have wifi. I really don't need it while out and about.
And I truly hate how focused people are on phones when in stores, restaurants, driving cars, etc. I don't want to become like that.

You are way nicer than me When dd's phone got wet 6 weeks before our last contract expired I did switch SIMS cards with her so she could take my phone, but no way would she be getting a new iPhone over me. We were waiting to switch service providers to get iPhones and our timing was great. The new 5 had just come out, so the 4 was $.99 and the 4S $99 (with contract of course). It probably took me a year to really use & appreciate all the features in a smart phone, but the kids were up and running with them immediately.

You want to talk lame... smartphones and I don't get along. I have an iphone that I use strictly as an ipod. I rarely use the phone and prefer actual buttons when I do. It was a hand-me-down from DH.

I was gone all day, came home and knew I would fall asleep. I had an important meeting that I couldn't miss... Picked up my phone and said "Siri., wake me at. 6:30"
Waiting in the dr office, bored, I read and post on 2 peas using my phone. Or read my kindle book only phone
Someone states a fact I don't think is true.... I can look it up immediately.
I need to get a message to dd, but I know she can't answer her phone... I text.
Have a check to deposit... I do it on my phone
I want to go garage sales... I find them and plot my route only phone .... It even shows where my car is
These are a few of the reasons I am glad my home isn't just a phone!!

I only got a cell phone for the first time two years ago--and it's NOT a smart phone. I'm happy with what I have, at least for now. I barely use it as it is, so I can't justify the extra cost. My phone does what I need it to do and I'm OK with that.

If you are then I am too. So far I don't see the need. I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. Books, music and travel for me. I have a computer at home. Why do I need one on my phone too? A phone is to call someone or have someone call you. That's it as far as I'm concerned. Debbie in MD. this is my feeling about smart phones as well. I don't need it for myself and am perfectly content without it. I hate talking on the phone. It drives me crazy to see people constantly staring at their phones and unable to interact with the world around them. But since work says I must have it, I now have a new iphone that I just can't get used to. I haven't figured out most of it (just don't have the time or the inclination to be bothered with it and I'm not enamored by technology - drives DH batty!), haven't called anyone not on the company/client list since I got it, and I no longer have access to my entire list of personal phone numbers from my old phone. Work pays for it. If they weren't paying the bill, I wouldn't have it. For me a cell phone=stress. I have it on silent mode (no vibrate even) because the constant sounds and buzzing were getting me so stressed out. Every time it goes off, it just means some other problem I have to deal with. Since I work with colleagues around the world, it would ring and beep all night long.
While I like the $50/a month plan This to me is a big problem with cell phones - they're so expensive. These days we're happy about a $50/month plan; my boss talks about paying "only" $200/mo for his family. I miss the days of paying only $15/month for my landline. That was an affordable phone plan!
Yeah, I'm a dinosaur, and my friends make fun of me, but I don't care. Now that I have a smart phone, all they want to do is tell me about "cool apps" that I have no interest in (they don't understand). What happened to real conversation?! My hs and middle school age kids have no interest in having a smart phone. (or any phone for that matter - I can't even get them to use the landline!)

I don't have a smartphone. I have a "dumb" tracfone, that doesn't even have a camera on it.
But I also don't have a Kindle, iPad, or even an iPod of my own.
I'm not ashamed to admit that I live within my means, even if that puts me behind in terms of technology. But it is frustrating sometimes.

I can remember being a waitress, the first time I saw a cellphone. We had a regular customer who used to leave it in the middle of the table, with the ringer set really loud. He always made a big show of scrambling to answer it, but in reality, I think he liked the attention since cell phones were so uncommon. It was a huge phone, like in the OP's photo.

I have just a very basic pay-as-you-go phone. I just don't use it enough to justify anything more. Plus, I don't really like multi-purpose stuff. I want my phone to be a phone, my camera to be a camera, my computer to be a computer, etc.

My husband's phone isn't much more advanced than the one in the OP. It is at least 15 years old and is a pay as you go. I put about £20 a year on it for him. He has never sent a text in his life.

In our bedroom we still have a rotary phone! The one we got when we first got married in 1980! I still like the sound of it's ring!

Nope, no smartphone here either. Just have a cheapy lg that does phone calls and a very occasional text. I'm happy to pay $30 a month for 1500 minutes w/Straightalk. Had no desire for a smartphone.....'til I joined up on this board, started scrapping again, and saw how cool it would be to take good pix w/a phone and edit and order prints via a phone app.... Oh well, still too cheap to do that, but I am thinking about it.
BTW that pic is the bomb! I remember when having a phone like that was the ultimate! And the carphones that plugged in in your car.

I resisted getting an Iphone for years.... now DH makes fun of me for refusing to upgrade my 4s... I'm not even a huge fan of my phone it just streamlines certain things for us.
My whole family is tech savvy, my close to retirement parents are both running around with Ipads and Macbook Airs. Truth be told I would love nothing more than to go back to the days with no cell phones and no text messgeing.

I don't have a smart phone. I will eventually, but holding out because I don't want to spend the $$.
And even better - my husband got his first cell phone ever this year! He started a new job and they gave him a smart phone.
My dad doesn't have a cell phone. My mom has one, but uses it twice a year I think.

Nope. I don't have one either and am in no rush. Like pp's said, I have it for my convenience. It's bad enough people (other than my kids) can reach me if I'm not home. I don't need anyone thinking I'm going to be checking e-mail all day.
My little slider phone is enough for me. The only reason I even agreed to texting was because it's the best way to communicate w/my teens.
FWIW, my husband just gave me an iPad and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it. Other than play games.

Oh yes me too! I joke with my girlfriends that I am a Smart Friend with a Dumb Phone. I know no one else in my age bracket who doesn't have a smartphone. But the data plans are so stinking expensive! I am sure that someday when I get one I won't be able to live without it either, but for now I am happy to not have that attachment.

DH and I both have the red LGs from about 5 years ago, both on $10 / month pay as you go plans. I have a cell phone for when our land line craps out (5 days straight one time).
We just ordered an iphone but we will hook it up to the $10 / month plan with no data. I want it mostly for the camera. The plans here in Canada are so expensive and I'm way too cheap for that.

I totally had that phone!! It was my first cell phone. My poor neck trying to tuck it in to talk while driving (because nobody had any idea it was wrong, you just thought you were super cool). And my iPhone is my life. Seriously.

I don't have a smart phone. I have an old flip phone. My mom still has a working rotary phone and when we visit her, my 12 year old dd loves to call her friends on it. She said, "it's the coolest thing ever!" The first time she used it she asked me how it worked! Boy, did that make me feel old! She always comments about how clear and crisp the connection is. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal last weekend about rotary phones and how some folks are using them again.
