DS was in band for 8 years and loved every second of it. He no longer plays his clarinet and it wasn't worth restoring it for someone else to use so I talked DH into making a lamp! We're pretty happy with the results! You can click on the picture to make it larger. DS absolutely ![]() D it! He posted a picture on Facebook that read RIP Clarinet. All his band friends who played clarinet want one!! Attachments:

I love it! Definitely going to consider this once we fully retire the clarinet here.

I love it! Definitely going to consider this once we fully retire the clarinet here. When you get ready, let me know and I'll let you know what we learned! I'm ready now, please! SO COOL. Brilliant. My college son keeps resisting giving his away - so many memories - but it's just languishing in a case. We are NOT handy, so I'd hire somebody to make it. If you have time, could you post a photo of the lamp without the shade, please? (So I can see the part where the bulb screws in.)

I will post a picture tomorrow when he's at work. We googled clarinet lamp and got so many hits! They are fairly common. Trumpet too!!

I love this idea! It turned out really well. My 10yo is using his uncle's old trumpet and there are still more kids coming after him but maybe once they are all grown we can do this also.

That is fabulous! It really makes a cool looking lamp, and it will hold so many memories for your son, not only of playing it, but of his dad for making it! Great idea.

I can see photos there. I had no idea it was a "thing." People are so damn clever. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is awesome!! But when I saw your title I thought it was going to be the lamp from A Christmas Story. I changed the title to be clearer. I just reloaded the page and saw clarinet instead of Christmas and thought I must be seeing things and people are going to think I'm a nut for what I posted. I have a bad case of holiday brain this year.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have my old beat up clarinet, thought to hang it on a wall , but this is awesome. My DD already stole the case for it, it's a really cool dark green leather with blue velvet interior. She uses for her vintage medical theme apartment, but the clarinet is just sitting there. Luckily, DH is totally up for this. It's going to go in the same room as the lamp my Grandfather made for me (he was a Fenton art glass maker). Thank you again, Joy

I just love lamps made out of other things. When I was growing up, my Grandfather had a desk lamp made from an old telephone, the kind with a separate earpiece: when you raised the earpiece the light would come on. We also had a huge vintage copper fire extinguisher and a rifle lamp.
This really is an awesome present. It's tasteful, goes with several decorating styles, and has great sentimentality. It'll look good even in a room with laundry all over the floor! LOL
Big applause for a great gift idea!
