I have had a massive nosebleed for the past 3 hours...I never get nosebleeds. Dh wants to take me over to the hospital, but I think i will be okay. Do any of you have tips for stopping a nosebleed? I have tried laying down, putting ice on my nose and the back of my neck, and pinching the bridge of my nose. Help!

I have a friend who gets them and when they won't stop with the things you've tried she ends up going in so it can be stopped.

Put some ice cubes in your mouth....if it does not stop, you probably should go to the ER or Urgent Care

Three hours? I would definitely go to the ER.

You might need to go and get your nose cauterised to stop the bleeding if it's been going for that long.
In addition, if I never had nosebleeds and then had one for three hours which didn't respond to the treatment you are giving, I would probably want to investigate whether there was an underlying cause (not that I think it's anything serious, but just for peace of mind).

Do you have a nurse's line you could call? Or maybe you can call urgent care. I hope you are better soon.

Three hours? I would definitely go to the ER. Agreed, I would go too. Has it been bleeding continuously for three hours?

You are supposed to bend your head FORWARD/DOWN while pinching nostrils for a full 10 min so it can clot. However, I do agree you need to go to a hospital if it has actually been 3 hours. www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/003106.htm "Home CareSit down and gently squeeze the soft portion of the nose between your thumb and finger (so that the nostrils are closed) for a full 10 minutes. Lean forward to avoid swallowing the blood and breathe through your mouth. Wait at least 10 minutes before checking if the bleeding has stopped. Many nosebleeds can be controlled in this way if enough time is allowed for the bleeding to stop. It may help to apply cold compresses or ice across the bridge of the nose. Do NOT pack the inside of the nose with gauze. Lying down with a nosebleed is not recommended. You should avoid sniffing or blowing your nose for several hours after a nosebleed. If bleeding persists, a nasal spray decongestant (Afrin, NeoSynephrine) can sometimes be used to close off small vessels and control bleeding. When to Contact a Medical Professional
Get emergency care if:
Bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes.
Nose bleeding occurs after an injury to the head. This may suggest a skull fracture, and x-rays should be taken. Your nose may be broken (for example, it is misshapen after a blow or injury) Call your doctor if you or your child has repeated nosebleed, particularly if they are becoming more frequent and are not associated with a cold or other minor irritation."

My SO recently had a problem with a nosebleed that wouldn't stop and he had to have it cauterized. Some Urgent Care facilities offer that service, but not all, so you could check with some of those first before going to the ER.

Don't mean to scare you but you need to get to the ER. I don't want to sound like a negative nellly but one of our really good friends is going through chemo right now and it was all discovered because of a TWO hour nose bleed.
Had he gone the first time, they would have caught it sooner.
Please go to the ER!!
Edited to add: If having nose bleeds is NOT normal for you, please go to the ER.

^^^^What they said^^^^
I've recently done an excessive amount of first aid training & if it really has been 3 hours, even if not continuously, then you should definitely seek medical attention. Also, the advice referring to sitting, leaning forwards is spot on, aka "sit & spit"
Hope you're sorted soon.

I'm thinking 3 hours is a long time to have a steady stream of blood coming from your body. Get to the ER stat! Please let us know how you're doing!

A 2 hour span since the last post so I hope this is an indication she went in for treatment.

This is the right first aid advice.
And the 10 FULL minutes is important, sit with a clock in front of you and do not stop the pressure until 10 full minutes has passed. Most people stop the pressure to "check if it's still bleeding" every couple of minutes and this just washes any clot that has formed away again and then you have to start over.
Once you have done this properly and have applied the pressure for 10 minutes...check if the bleeding has stopped. If it hasn't do it again for another 10 minutes. If the bleeding hasn't stopped after 2 x 10 mins, then you need to go and see a doctor/ER.

My DH called his sister, who is a nurse. She basically gave us the same advise as pjaye and several of you did. It finally stopped. My sis in law asked if I had been taking a lot of aspirin lately...I have! So, that's probably why it bled for so long. I am feeling okay, just tired...heading for bed. Thanks, everyone

Ok....ER nurse here. I see that your nose has stopped bleeding so that's great!
For future reference....The 10 minute rule is excellent advice. You also do need to tilt your head forward. This does two things: it elongates the vessels in the back of your neck that supplies blood to your nose. Elongating these vessels allows for less blood flow. It also keeps the blood from running down the back of your throat and into your stomach.
We do the 10 minute trick for folks AND we often use two sprays of Afrin up each nostril. That usually helps too. You definitely do not want to use it for more than 2-3 days max!
Glad the bleeding has stopped!

My husband gets nosebleeds easily so he avoids aspirin. I've read that vitamin c is good for strengthening blood vessels.

You might still want to get that cauterized. After my first severe nose bleed, I kept getting them. The only way I got cauterized was to see an ear, nose, and throat specialist. My regular doctor (general practitioner) wouldn't do it, and neither would my urgent care. Come to think of it, neither did my emergency room.
