I had always kind of wondered if Robin Williams wasn't bipolar. It seemed,at times, that his comedy was manic. And then there are the deep depressions that are now being discussed. Whatever the case, it's sad to have him gone. Tonight Fresh Air replayed an interview from 2006 in which he denied being bipolar.

Well, he was bipolar. And , as often occurs, he was addicted to drugs and alcohol . He was in the deep depression in the last few weeks of his life. It's a cyclical disease.
We know several people with bipolar.
About a year ago, a friend lost his battle with this disease.
There needs to be more open and honest discussion about it, and way more support. The stigma of mental illness continues to work against steps forward in the fight.
This disease hides in the darkness.

Personally, I think the reason he doesn't usually have big smiles in his photos is because of his eyes. He has very small eyes (and I kind of do as well) and when you smile big but have small eyes, your eyes kind of get hidden. I have learned over the years to just give a very subtle smile so that my eyes don't look squinted up and closed. Perhaps he learned the same or was advised to smile slightly so his eyes wouldn't look squinted/closed.
