Hi Peas, we are going to Hearst Castle this weekend - should be a nice getaway I'm on the Hearst Castle website and can't decide which tour sounds best? Stairs/walking don't bother anyone going. We just want to see as much of the house as possible. Thanks!!

I was there over 30 years ago, but I remember being fascinated by it all. And I dreamt of swimming in the pool for months after.

I can't remember the tours but I do know that you should ask lots of questions as the tour guides know lots of info that isn't necessarily in the script for the tour.

I've been several times, most recently three years ago. I always seem to take the general overview tour.

The highlights for me would be the indooor pool and the outdoor pool for sure . Of course, you'll want to see some of the house, too. It's all fascinating and fabulous! You will enjoy whatever you see.

The Grand Rooms Tour is a good overview if you haven't been there before. You get to see both the pools on this tour.
The upstairs suite tour is pretty cool because you get to see some AMAZING rooms.

I went last year and saw the bedrooms. I loved it. I really want to go back and see the kitchens. I also dream of swimming in those pools. Someday I'll throw caution to the wind and visit just to jump in the pool; what's one night in jail?

Start with the Grand Rooms tour and make sure you arrive with enough time to see the movie at the visitor center before you go on to the Castle.

We went last year & saw the dining room, indoor pool, outdoor pool, office & outside buildings. It was a great overview but not a lot of detail on the inside.

Thanks everyone I think we will do the Grand Rooms tour and movie first. I'm looking forward to a nice weekend! Any other things we should do? Restaurants to try? We are driving up from OC and probably staying in Santa Barbara or something. Thanks again!!!

If you like lighthouses there is one just north of Hearst Castle - piedrasblancas.org/ - you can tour the light house which is sorta fun. Also check out the little towns around there - Harmony, Cayacous (my favorite one). The little area right at the base of Hearst Castle has a few stores. Don't eat lunch at the little cafe in Harmony - it's so overpriced! If you like mexican food check out Taco Temple in Morro Bay. It's right on the 1 - great food!! You can go see the elephant seals - there aren't many right now, mostly the males but it's still fun to see them. And of course wine tasting everywhere!

The grand rooms tour was great. I didn't feel like I missed anything and had plenty of time at the pools and gardens.

Thank you! We were going to go to the little cafe in Harmony - lol, but now we won't It's not that it was bad...cause it was okay. But it was very expensive for very small portions. It was $50 for 3 of us and that was just for the food - we drank water. There are so many great places to eat in that area that are much better.

We had dinner at Moonstone Beach. Wonderful restaurant across the street from the ocean. The food was amazing!

I haven’t been to Hearst Castle since I was a little girl and that was a long long time ago. But I do have a story about Hearst castle.
I live in a small town in Washington State; one of my best friends grew up in California. I’ve always known she came from a very wealthy family. She is not one to brag but just little things in our conversations over the years about her childhood would simply amaze me, her neighbors, childhood friends, shopping. One day I was talking about wanting to go back to Monterey and I especially wanted to see The Hearst Castle again. I was talking about remembering the turquoise and gold in the swimming pools and how I remembered that. She started talking about going there and the private quarters, I said we didn’t get to go in the private quarters. She said she had stayed there. I said “stayed there”? She then went on (with some prodding on my part) that she went to sleep overs there when she was in middle and high school. Long story short her friends were Virginia and Patty Hearst. She asked me if I knew who Patty Hearst was. Anyone who is my age knows who Patty Hearst is. She also knew Steven Weed, Patty Hearst boyfriend when she was kidnapped. She knew Patty’s parents William Randolph and Catherine Hearst. Looking at my friend you would never ever know she grew up in the lap of luxury. Only a glimpse of some of the wonderful things in her home would be a hint.
