With all this talk of Robin Williams and his kindness, the recent threads with tolerance and lack of it debates and such, it got me thinking. People are born with some degree of empathy (for the most part) but don't you think some comes from the hard times in your life? Suffering/hard times puts things in a different perspective as "before". I know before my past issues, I thought I was pretty empathetic and generally kind, but now it's a whole new level. I can "feel it" more. I can still be a biotch at times, I'm sure of that, but realize it sooner. It doesn't work with everyone, I suppose. Some turn bitter.
Maybe that's one of the reasons RW seems so kind to people? He's been there, done that, no room to judge attitude. And no,I'm not a psychiatrist, just a thought that came to my brain. Just for discussion. No one knows the baggage people are carrying. I have learned a bunch from bad/difficult times. Too bad we sometimes have to learn that way.

I think it depends a lot on the person. Some people do, as you say, become more empathetic and understanding of others. But I have also seen people go through the same types of hard times and come out of it angry and bitter and feeling like they are now owed the world.

Empathy is not something you are born with. It's developmental. I think it's quite complex. I do agree that a person can change because of his own experience. He can become angry, bitter and less sympathetic, or sweet, caring and sympathetic.
