We have a Google home and love it! My parents have an echo and we'd bought them a Google home for Christmas. My husband bought everyone Google homes for Christmas - my sister, my parents, his parents, both of his sisters, and a second and third for us so we can have one on every level.
I don't know all the things you can do with it, but I can tell you some off the things I do know.
You can ask it any questions just like you would type into Google. You can sync in with many if not all smart remotes. Dh set ones up so you say, "okay Google, turn on the PlayStation." And it lowers our screen, turns on the projector, turns on the received, and turns on the PlayStation. You can sync in to a Nest thermostat if you have one. You can sync it to smart light switches to control your lights with it. It can tell you quite amusing jokes it you ask it to. I love walking into the room and asking it for a news update and it does a 10 minute current news summary. You can ask it to set timers, not sure how many, but I know multiple and then ask it the status of the timers as they are going. You can control the volume by asking it to turn itself up or down, or by touching the top surface.
And of course you can get it to play any music you can imagine.
My kids 3 & 5 love asking it to play different things.
We're hooked!

Here is a good article that compares them

I love my Echo. I have the big Echo in the mail part of our house, actually in the kitchen, but we have a very open floor plan and we have a dot in the Master Bedroom. We use ours for Music, Timers, Alarms, grocery lists, to do lists & the weather. Oh and my kids make her spell obnoxious stuff. They are all going to be excited when they open their own dots for their rooms. I can not wait to set those alarms!! They are teens, it is time they start getting up on their own with out us yelling at them 1000 times! I know that Alexa can do SO MUCH more than we ask her too. We dont have the fancy lighting or the thermostat that she can control. Maybe some day.

I love my Echo.
I want a Dot for my bedroom but they are out of stock right now. I keep asking Alexa what her deals of the day are and hoping she has them for 29.99 like she did on Black Friday weekend.

Pretty sure the dot was 39.99 over thanksgiving, that is when I ordered the ones for my kids. And if you are looking for one, Lots of Major retailers are selling them right now. You dont have to buy from Amazon. Home depot, Lowes, Target and I think even Best buy had them for 39.99.

This may be a dumb question....if you own no other device, can you just use the Dot? It's so cheap I would like to try it but don't know anything about these things.

You can just get a Dot without having to have an Echo. You will need to do a bit of research on what it can do if you dont have Amazon prime. I quickly looked it up and it says you just wont have access to Amazon Music. But I am not sure if there are other features you might not have with our prime. If you have prime, then no problem. Also... when you get one, You will start getting emails weekly, sometimes daily about what is new with Alexa. For example, They recently just added that you can say a few lyrics from a song and Alexa can tell you what song it is. I have not tried that yet, but it was in an email.

Yes, I bought one for my SIL for Christmas. Hoping DD picked that off my Amazon wishlist for me too! I bought a bluetooth speaker for DH to use out by the pool, he wants one to use with Pandora and his music on his computer, but I'm hoping for a Dot and pair it with his new speaker! Yay, music by the pool, finally! SaveSave

I can't say which is better because I only have an echo. I got her when you had to ask for an invite and I don't think Google home was out.
I doubt hee ability to find answers to questions is as good at the home.
Alexa's speaker is awesome, I don't know about the home. I tried to play with on today, but it didn't work

apparently the Echo is really good. Fed ex has mine somewhere is shipping land. They can't seem to find my box. They asked me what was in it the box and how can I describe the contents. This was amazon prime from November. Amazon is suppose to call me tomorrow to see what Fed ex had to say. Not sure what dh will have under the tree this year

Echo and Dot are the same exact thing except for the speaker. Echo has a pretty robust speaker that sounds pretty good, even when playing music. It's multidimensional and can be very loud. Dot has a much smaller speaker. It's designed to either be a one-room kind of device, or to hook into your own existing sound or home theater system. But even if you don't hook it in, it still has a speaker that works fine, but isn't "stereo" quality.
