I'm new to card making and excited about creating a set of cards to have on hand. Right now I need the most cards for baby showers, followed by "new job congrats". I'd like to include a few more categories but not go overboard. I purchased a really cute set of get well stamps, but then realized I've never sent a get well card! Duh I realize I need to be more intentional about my stamps and sentiments. Do you have "inventories"? How many cards and what are your top 3 or 4 categories?

I like to have Baby, Birthday and Anniversary on hand.
As far as how many, it really depends on the time of the year. The birthdays in our family are all grouped together in certain months, so I can go months without having to send one.

Mostly I keep birthdays and thank yous on hand. I also do cards without sentiments or with a general sentiment that I can adapt to a range of occasions when required.

I donate the majority of the cards I make so mainly they are birthday and Christmas cards. Followed by thinking of you which can be used for many occasions by changing what you put on the inside.
I also do a fair amount of sympathy cards.

What do I have, or what do I NEED, LOL? The sympathy cards are the ones that always catch me off guard, so I wish I had several of those on hand all the time. LOTS of thank you cards. I was always pretty good about sending them but since DD was born I have redoubled my efforts to make sure that thank yous are ALWAYS sent out when appropriate (which is more often than most people think). Birthday cards are another thing that I end up scrambling for at the last minute. At some point I hope that I'll be able to get a nice stash of cards made up ahead of time to have on hand.

I'm hoping for a nice stash of cards as well. I'm thinking maybe 5 each of my top categories? Not sure how long it will take me to make 20 cards, but I'll just get started.

I think part of what you have in your stash depends on what "stage of life" you are in. Right now I need get well, thinking of you and sympathy cards - those are the ones needed without a lot of notice. Baby, birthday and anniversary are fun to make, so it's easy to have a few of those on hand. There's usually enough of a notice to get cards made for weddings and graduations.

I don't keep birthday cards on hand because those are ones I really enjoy making individualized for the birthday person. I get real pleasure from carefully considering what that person would like, and then thinking good thoughts and well wishes for them while creating their card. I like to make my thank you cards specific to whatever I am thanking someone for. It is pretty much the same with new baby, baby shower and wedding cards. I do make thinking of you, get well, and just because cards to keep on hand. I also try to keep on hand a couple of both masculine & feminine general type cards without sentiments so I can pull one & add an appropriate sentiment as the need arises.
I am trying to make a few sympathy cards to have on hand because they are so hard to make on short notice, but I don't find them any easier to make even in advance.

I get real pleasure from carefully considering what that person would like, and then thinking good thoughts and well wishes for them while creating their card. I do this too, especially for family and close friends, but 'general' birthday cards are good to have on hand. For baby cards, I have a couple girl, boy and 'neutral' ahead of time. Sympathy cards I try to have a female or male oriented one.
A lot of times I will make more than one sympathy, baby, etc. at a time. Especially if I really like the design, stamps, technique or paper I'm using.

I try to keep a good supply of birthday, get well, thinking of you, thank you, and cards that are blank inside. My sister told me to not make sympathy cards ahead because if you do you will need them. I do try to keep a few anyway. It would be nice to make all cards with a certain person in mind, but some times I need to have one quickly, so I like having enough to pick one when I need it.

I always find it hardest to make Sympathy cards when I need them. So having a stash of them on hand is helpful.

Baby, birthday and anniversary are fun to make, so it's easy to have a few of those on hand. There's usually enough of a notice to get cards made for weddings and graduations. I agree with this, it depends a lot on what is going on with your family and peer group at the moment as to what you will need more of. While I like the idea of doing customized birthday cards for people, it's more important for me right now to just make sure a card gets there on time and that won't happen if I put it off. Plus, we're in the beginning of the phase where we are constantly sending kid birthday cards or going to kid parties and for those I don't think it matters as much. I also completely agree with those who have a hard time making sympathy cards at the time when they are needed. I do, too. I don't think it matters so much what is on them or how they are decorated, it matters what we write inside, so to have a few generic handmade ones on hand would be helpful for me.

I like to have birthday and thinking of you cards. I send these most often. I should make some sympathy cards to have on hand, but I need to find some appropriate sentiment stamps.

Thank You and birthday cards are the ones that get used up the fastest. I try to keep some on hand in two languages. I also keep a small bunch of "for you" cards that can go for birthday, graduation, even get well. "Thinking of you" cards are also super useful for sympathy (as long as you don't make them with clowns and balloons!), get well, or any type of anniversary.
Most of my friends are beyond the new baby years... Christian cards are useful for First Communion or Confirmation, and I try to keep a few Bar/Bat Mitzvah cards around.
I do prefer to make cards for the specific occasion and recipient, but it sure helps to have a stash for when I can't.
I also try to keep some kid-friendly birthday cards on hand. My kids like to rifle through my stash and choose cards for their friends.

timely question as I'm restocking my card stash currently.
My categories are:
Anniversary Birthday General/blank cards (either no sentiment or basic ones like 'thinking of you' or 'just a little note' Christmas Congratulations Easter Fathers Day Flag Day Fourth of July Get Well Hallowe'en Memorial Day Mothers Day New Years Day St Nicholas Day Summer (general summer-themed cards) Sympathy Thanksgiving Thank you Valentines Day Winter (general winter-themed cards)
I'll often use up scraps from a seasonal layout to make a card or two ahead of the season or I'll make a random card from layout scraps so I have a rather lot of categories. Every now and then I'll look and see which categories are empty and make cards - today I've made Happy Birthday and Thanksgiving cards and am about to work on Thank you cards.

Thank-you cards top my list for sure, followed by birthday cards. I do a huge batch of Christmas cards, but I only do a few for other big holidays, just to close family who will appreciate them. Sympathy cards and congrats/anniversary cards are up there too, but thank-you cards are my biggest batch.

I like to have a good supply of baby and wedding cards to hand but I leave space on each to put a topper which i can have the recipient's name etc on it so that it's personal to them

I like to have sympathy and get wells on hand, as they are time sensitive. Other cards -- birthdays, weddings, etc. -- I tend to make as I go and customize to the receiver. However, sometimes, I can't get to it in time and have to skip it.

Thank you and Birthday are the two big ones. After those, thinking of you and sympathy. I've also started making birthday tags for kids to use on birthday presents for friends.
