How many times does it usually take you to create a card you're happy with? I start with an idea in my mind and it usually takes me about 5 iterations of the card to be satisfied. Usually the technique or coloring don't turn out the first few times. Sometimes I just don't like the look once it's all together.
How many times does it usually take you?

Oh, gosh...I guess it depends on how detailed the card is. If it's a clean & simple card usually takes me 2 tries to get it right. If it's more detailed it may take 4 tries or the design just doesn't work and I completely dismiss the idea I pictured in my head.

I am usually following a sketch so am good there. But I was having major issues when stamping on Monday night. I don't know how many times I stamped the card front only to have ink left behind where it shouldn't have been or to not have a crisp image. Finally got it after 4 attempts.

I am not sure if I have ever had a card come out right (picture in my head) first time. But many times I like the card anyway. I rarely junk a card. So I may end up with several cards before the "picture" becomes reality.

Well that males me feel better because I can never get it the first time. It's disappointing because I waste material.

I am working on my Christmas card now. I think I have made it three times and still don't like it.

It depends. Sometimes once or twice. Other times six, or eight, or eleven. Lol.

I usually have an idea of how I want the card to look, then I change one paper, which leads to changing embellishments, which means that by the time the card is finished it looks nothing like the way I meant it to look. Sometimes the end result is better than my original idea.

My cards aren't perfect, but if I can't get them "good enough" after 3 tries, I'm tired of it and I quit. This is my fun time and after that it's not fun anymore.

You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

Making a card for a guy is really difficult for me that I end up revising for more than a dozen times.

So all of you will throw away several early attempts at a card? Because of very visible mistakes and/or the card in reality didn't look as good as the card in your head? I didnt know this was a thing. It took a long time for me to put scrapbook pages to bed with flaws. I have kept the same mentality for cards I work on. I've probably only made 50 cards, and only thrown 1 away. Not because I love all 50 of them, but I just hate being wasteful. I'm not putting down the concept of wanting perfection, I just really didn't know this was common.

It would have to be something really, really bad that could not be covered up before I trash it. Even then I may save parts of it. But if I have something in mind I will do various versions until I 'get it right'. Some of the early versions may be quite nice but you know how it is. Cards are much smaller than layouts and they are more versatile in the way that I can use my not quite right designs for another time. They just become part of my finished card stash.

Even when I use sketch or copy a card it takes me a few times to get it right, that's usually because I'm tinkering to fit my style.......

Thank you for clarifying. I was making an incorrect assumption. No one is being wasteful, but many are striving for perfection, or something close to it.

Thank you for clarifying. I was making an incorrect assumption. No one is being wasteful, but many are striving for perfection, or something close to it. I don't know if perfection is what I am after, remember its just an image in my mind. Maybe control is a better word for me. I often have the image in my head but as I start to work on making that image a reality, my mind sometimes wanders into other areas. And I start using things that are not what I should be using. So my pretty pink card is looking like a blue card because the patterned paper I pull looks better on blue paper rather than pink. So finish the blue card and start again on the pink card. Often for me this is my biggest problem. And sometimes size is my problem, I think I can put this here and that there but there is just not enough room. So I change the sketch and make this one and then go ahead and make a bigger card that allows for everything on it that I want.

I have started using magnets to put the car together before I glue anything. This has helped reduce the number of attempts. I often have to re-color because I just didn't like my original idea.

I don't glue anything down till I am happy with it, so I would say really only once or twice.
Also, those receiving my cards aren't going to be picky, and they had no idea what was my vision for the card before I began. They're just happy to get a hand made card.

Even if an attempt goes awry, I nearly always find a way to save it and send it to someone anyway. Good enough, definitely. It's just a card, I had fun making it, and someone will have fun getting it and tossing it at the other end. I'm sure not going to waste materials and time for perfection over just a card!

The only card I have ever tossed was the one I spilled soda on. I do hold a stamped & colored image up to a number of card stock and/or ribbon colors when putting a card together to get the impact I want, but I can't ever remember tossing or re-doing a card. It is probably because I work so slowly and I don't really plan a card out in advance. I stamp & color on white card stock first and then decide which die I want to use to cut out the image and then choose the base paper and/or matting colors.
