I really want a new $45 dollar table for my scrapbook room. I live 7 hours away. So I can either wait until I'm able to drive down or pay $350 in shipping charges. Obviously IKEA doesn't want to be in the shipping business.

Your last line is your answer. They are not in the shipping business. I'm sorry

In the past, I have heard of 3rd-party Ikea shippers who will make a run from Ikea to a certain town or area with items for several people - at a cost much lower than Ikea would do. You pay them, they go and get the item, and they either bring it to your house or to a central location in your area where you can pick it up. You might Google and see if you can find something like that in your area.

Their stuff doesn't ship well. If the shipping company drops the package, it's probably going to get damaged. Once it's together, it is pretty sturdy.
And it's usually heavy.

They want you to come to the store, get sucked in and buy more?

Check Amazon, I swear I saw IKEA stuff for sale on there a few days ago (lamps at least).

I wonder if it has anything to do with how close you live to a store. I live about 10 minutes from one and ordered recently. Shipping was $10.

A new IKEA will be opening next year about 3.5 hours away...and lucky for me, my mom lives there so I'll get there frequently.

Obviously IKEA doesn't want to be in the shipping business This. They don't. That's how they do things so cheap. They want you to come in, get the stuff yourself, take it home yourself and build it yourself. That's what keeps the costs down. They don't want to be running a whole separate area and employing people to do deliveries to all sorts of places that are hours away...especially not for a $45 table.

Ikea has warehouses around the country and shipping is based on how far you are from the warehouse, versus the store, and if they do regular shipments to your area. However the warehouses tend to be near the stores so if you are far from a store you are likely far from a warehouse. I only know this because we just went through it. We went to the store about 2 1/2 hours from us to look at a pretty large sofa/chaise combo. We weren't sure if we wanted it so we asked about shipping. It would only cost us about $100 to ship because they said they do frequent trips from the warehouse to our area.

Plus, even the warehouse is pull the product yourself, haul it to the register and then to your car and home.
But honestly the prices are so very good that it is worth it. But I do wonder how many people hurt themselves in the store trying to pull heavy bookshelves, desks, etc.
Shipping just sounds like a line of business they don't want to be in....

They want you to come to the store, get sucked in and buy more? Ha yep and it would probably work too if there was a store closer than 7 hours!

A few months ago, I bought six or seven pieces of furniture, including a couch and a double bed. I had the option of paying an extra £10 for Ikea staff to collect all my pieces from the warehouse ready for delivery. All I had to do was go to the delivery desk and pay for everything. It was so worth it, and worked out at £1 per box. No reaching, lifting or hauling necessary!

Having this dilemma right now. There is a bed my dd wants. There is a store about 20 minutes away, but we do not have a truck to transport nor can we lift the bed. I would kill to have it delivered by a local and put together. The shipping on it would be $170. So the project of the bedroom makeover has been on hold.

The guys at IKEA will help you load it and then when you get home take it out in pieces. That is what we did when we bought something big and heavy. We carried the pieces into the house and then assembled it.
