I think the problem is wearing pantyhose with jumpsuits. When you reach the point that you need pantyhose, that means you've peaked past your prime to be wearing skimpy outfits like that. I think the pantyhose makes them look every larger or just tackier. I googled recent pics of Beyonce and her legs don't look as big in that pic. Beyonce is known for her legs (which I've never found to be a flattering shape) but that's what her fans like, hence you won't see her wearing pants on stage. I wouldn't compare Beyonce to Mariah, Beyonce keeps her weight now, Mariah is constantly up and down. Which at her level, what is the problem? She doesn't cook, she has a staff so when I read crazy comments like this: "It's really hard. My diet, you would hate it," Carey told E! News recently while promoting the Dec. 4 premiere of her new E! docs-series Mariah's World. "All you eat is Norwegian salmon and capers every day. That's it." It makes me think that the rumors of her having a drinking problem are true and even with the best staff she can't pull her life together.

I went back and watched it. The fans tried to help her, they knew more of the words than she did. They sang, they tried, she did not. Her response to just mumble and twiddle with her hair or jewelry and wander around the stage teetering precariously on shoes she can't walk in, was unprofessional. I could get a better performance from almost literally ANY high school chorus student in the country. Very unprofessional of Mariah IMO.
At least with Lionel Richie being slightly off with his voice he still gave a performance, knew the words, and entertained the people there to party with him. Wether he was off due to sound/technical issues or not I don't know but he was professional about it. I feel sorry for him if he is touring with her.

I didn't think she was playing with her necklaces, I thought she was looking for her earpiece?
I agree with the fact that she didn't even try. At least at one point, her dancers pulled her back to do their choreography; surely she knew what part of the song that was and could have at least sung those words?

My HO, she's supposed to be a professional--been doing this for 20+ years. She's a well known diva, and not always in a good way. She should have been checking in, practicing, sound checking, KNOWING that she was going to be live, and on national TV around the world with everyone watching, instead of being diva-like with having to hire people to get her there on time, etc.
She's unfortunately becoming a joke and a has been.

DS (26 YO) was there last night as a guest of one of the performers, so he had nearly unfettered access behind the scenes. We just had a long phone conversation about the evening (By the way, he says he'd never ever ever do Times Square on NYE if he didn't get to do it this way, and it was one of the most memorable nights of his life). Anyhow, he was at the stage when Mariah performed (and also had first hand knowledge of what was going on in her trailer beforehand) and said as we saw it on TV (he watched a recording of it this morning) is exactly how it went down.
He had a lot of behind the scenes stuff to share about the performers, including Mariah, but I don't wanna get in trouble for posting any of it.

So, if she was lip syncing anyway, why wouldn't you just do the dance routine with your dancers and say screw the lip syncing. Save some face for your self and do what you are there to do: entertain. In large crowds like that, we know they are lip syncing, it is no big secret. I I'm not a singer but I'm guessing the problem was that she didn't realize when the song started (because she couldn't hear) and then she just couldn't get to the right part - like she had no idea where they were in the song. I think she was also probably a little drunk or high but I do also think there was a major malfunction with the sound. Admittedly I'm a big Mimi fan so while I think she is a total disaster right now (and yes, a total Diva), I still like her and feel a bit bad for her. |

Was she actually supposed to sing "Emotions" live? I just watched it on YouTube for the first time. I get the impression that the wrong track was playing - the one that just has her vocals on the high notes (which means she has probably never sang those high notes live in public). They were supposed to play the track with all of her vocals so she could lip-sync the whole song. When they didn't play that, she refused to sing live. She knew where she was in the song the whole time but wasn't gonna sing live. She's a hack and a has-been.

Busted! Or maybe she NEVER has hit those notes, except with auto-tune in the studio. This whole fiasco really calls into question just how talented she really was in the past. She might get a new 15 minutes of fame out of this, but in the long-run, she really has been tarnished by it. It can't have been worth it. Oh well. Someone pour her another drink. |

The weather might also factor into her hitting those high notes. I'm no singer, but noticed how tight my voice was last week caroling in 20ish degree weather. I imagine it's much tougher to hit those notes outside in 20-30 degree weather at midnight than in a studio. But again, I'm no singer, so purely speculating.

However there were a lot of professionals there last night who had no issues hitting their notes without any recorded vocals. |

I'm surprised at the comments about her body. I think she has a nice figure and don't think she looks any worse in a bodysuit than Beynonce. However, I agree that she appears to be trying too hard with her clothing. In the last few weeks I have seen several pics of her and she is always showing way more cleavage than she needs to, particularly for the events (NYE was A slightly more appropriate event for the outfit than the other times I have seen her). I also think it is ridiculous to wear heels so high that you can't walk properly and without assistance. I've only been able to watch snippets of the video from last night but it is clear that there were technical issues. I'm not a singer so I will take the word of those here who are, and give her the benefit of the doubt. I'll have to 'respectively' disagree... for the way she dresses she thinks she is a size 2 and not whatever size she is... She needs to wear stuff that fits her body shape not squeezing her body in what she thinks fits. Personally I think she is way to chunky to be wearing what she wearing. I keep thinking of a stuffed sausage.... I mean if she is 'plus' size, no problem, beautiful whatever she is, but she needs to wear things that fit her and she is definitely not doing that... I am not even going to start in on her boobs... that is another whole mess. |
