My dh showed me a picture of KoKo after they told him that Robin had passed away. I was surprised that the gorilla could understand death, and my that dh had tears in his eyes when he showed me.

There is such a sweet, soft, focused look in his eyes. He was taking in the whole experience and seemed aware of how rare it was. One thing disappointed me. I'm fluent in ASL and I wish he'd signed with Koko, even just a little. Koko has some favorite signs she would have been delighted to see.

Koko very much understands death. Watch videos of Koko when her cat, All Ball, dies; it's heartbreaking.
I'd seen the video of Koko and Robin a while ago; they have a beautiful connection.
Koko is a girl, by the way.

Koko is a girl, by the way. Yes, I was going to suggest finding the videos of Koko and All Ball. So sad. I'm curious to find out how old Koko is. As a Linguistics major in college I wrote a paper on her. And that was waaaaay back in the Dark Ages when I was in college. Off to google now. eta: She was born on July 4, 1971.

Why did they have to tell the gorilla?!?! Was Williams a regular visitor that Koko would have noticed missing? It just seems an opportunistic publicity stunt, otherwise.

I wondered the same thing. Why even tell Koko unless Robin Williams was a regular vistor? If he wasn't then there wouldn't have been any reason to tell her and they could have spared her that pain.
I've followed the Koko story for years and Penny (who has been with Koko for years and taught her sign language) doesn't seem to be the type of person who would inflict pain on Koko for no reason, so maybe Robin Williams was a regular visitor? Still why didn't they just wait until he missed a few appointments and Koko asked about him?

How sad for KoKo - that video is amazing, I just want to give them both a big hug.

Now that makes more sense. Koko overheard it and had to be told.
