If my son's backpack zipper broke after over 4 months of nearly daily use, I wouldn't think I was entitled to a replacement, unless the back pack has some sort of guarantee. Then it would be on the manufacturer to replace, not Kohl's.
I would also show your son how to properly pull on the zipper in order to avoid zipper issues. I see young kids, college students, adults, etc. use the zipper in a way that will guarantee the zipper will break (coats, backpacks). Not a judgment, just impatient people.
I show my Scouts to do this after seeing my son's kindergarten teacher show the kids the correct way. I also saw a lady on "Sewing with Nancy" say the same thing. Mary Kolb's (the Zipper Lady) advice for zipper longevity is to teach children to pull zipper tab upward to close or push downward to open—don’t pull straight out.

Limited Warranty Policy and Guidelines
Kelty branded products (tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and kid carriers) are warranted to the original owner against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the product. Kelty branded gear (lighting, trekking poles, furniture, sleeping pads, coolers and airbeds) are covered by a one-year warranty that protects the original owner against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
If a Kelty branded product or accessory covered by one these warranty options fails due to a manufacturing defect we will repair the product, without charge, or replace it, at our discretion. Only original, unaltered and unmodified materials and workmanship are covered by this policy. This warranty does not cover damage caused by accident, improper care, negligence, normal wear and tear, or the natural breakdown of colors and materials over extended time and use. This warranty does not cover consequential damages or any other losses arising from any defect of the product. Damage not covered under warranty may be repaired for a reasonable rate and a fee will be charged for return shipping.
Kelty’s Limited Warranty applies only to Kelty brand products purchased and used in the United States and products specifically authorized by Kelty for retail sale in Canada. For consumers, who are covered by consumer protection laws or regulations in their state of purchase or Canada, except in instances where those laws and regulations are not required to be cumulative, the benefits conferred by Kelty's Limited Warranty apply in addition to all rights and remedies conveyed by such consumer protection laws and regulations, including but not limited to these additional rights.
Kelty’s Limited Warranty does not apply to products that are not Kelty-branded, even if packaged or sold with Kelty products. Non-Kelty-branded products may have the benefit of a manufacturer's warranty provided by the product manufacturer. Please see your product box and literature for details.
Canadian Returns
Kelty will not credit previously paid customs and duties. Customers may pursue their own refunds in their location.
This warranty gives you specific legal rights; you may have other rights, which vary from state to state.
We reserve the right to change the terms and conditions of the above warranty at any time and without prior notice.
