So my dog LOVES squirrels. We go on a lot of walks (3+ per day) so lots of squirrel sighting opportunities. He used to see a squirrel and take off chasing until he reached the end if his leash, and then try to climb whatever tree the squirrel had escaped up, and bark and bark while the squirrel just sat up in that tree, mocking him. I would literally have to go pick him up to get him to move along.
Lately, however, he'll see the squirrel, run a few feet, and then just turn around and continue walking.
So here's my question---
Should I be happy that my dog is getting smarter and learned that he is never going to catch the squirrel, no matter how hard he tries?
Or should I be sad that he has given up on his dreams...

I would be happy my dog had learned to behave on a leash.

Smart dog to figure that out. My dumb dog is going on 3 and she still hasn't figured it out.

Your last line cracked me up. I'd said that your dog is maturing.

I would be happy my dog had learned to behave on a leash. Nobody said he has learned how to behave on a leash... That's just crazy talk...

Smart dog to figure that out. My dumb dog is going on 3 and she still hasn't figured it out. He's 10. So yeah...it took 10 years...

I think this is all part of his devious long-term plan. When the squirrel quits running away, assuming the dog is no longer going to chase him, the dog will pounce. He hasn't given up on his dream, he's just going for the long play.

Am I the only one picturing the squirrel from Ice Age always going for the acorn while reading the first part of the OP? I would have mixed feelings. I was so sad when my basset hound got to old to chase the squirrels. Now that he's passed and I have a young Dashound, I'm frustrated with the squirrel chasing.

I will watch my dog out the window and see squirrels eating out of her food bowl as she ignores them, but as soon as I step outside she will chase the squirrels off. It's so funny. I guess she thinks I expect her chase them.
