I'm skeptical this will happen, gathering info to be prepared. What's a reasonable amount of time to allot for Greek vacation? We will be traveling independently, knowing we won't see everything. Is ten days enough to visit landmarks and the shore? Any hints or tips? Travel will be on June, July, August.
LOL I suppose "shore" isn't what is said...
Thanks in advance!

In 10 days you can see a lot . You can do Athens and some of the islands.
Of course you won't be able to see it all.. the question is will it be enough for you.

I never do less then 2 weeks in Europe. It's an 10 hour flight and want to get my money's worth out of it. I also want to have enough time to really get to see the country.

I wouldn't plan to spend a lot of time in Athens but the Acropolis and the Plaka district are wonderful. I've been to Santorini, Mykonos and Corfu and loved all three islands--they are all very different. The site of ancient Olympia is amazing. A private tour is a must. That said, all of the places I've mentioned are not exactly close to each other! There is so much to see. You'll likely want to split your trip into a land tour and maybe an island hopper. Have fun planning...it's a beautiful country with warm and friendly people and the best food ever!

Here are some itinerary ideas you could copy. Gives you a good starting point for timeline and maps. Normally I would recommend going to Turkey with Greece since it's right next door but since they had 30 terrorist attacks last year I don't know anymore.

Avoid being in Greece around Aug 15 if you can as the Greek Orthodox Church is celebrating the Assumption and planes, trains & ferries will be heavily booked with Greeks heading to their home villages.
August can also be brutally hot, so I'd try travel as early as possible in the summer or wait until September. I think at least 10 days split between the mainland (not just Athens) and one set of islands will give you a good feel for the country. The Cyclades (Mykonos, Santorini, Paros, etc.) have a great mix of archeological digs, restaurants, hotels and beaches. I would fly between Athens and Paros and then ferry between the islands, flying back to Athens.

Thanks, maybe we should allow at least two weeks. I'm still skeptical, not because I don't want to do it but because we had a different trip in mind. DS thought this sounded better. Thanks annabella for links. If not this year, I'lol save for later

I went to Athens, Mykonos and Santorini in June for 10 days (excl. travel time) and it was perfect. We spent one day in Athens and split the rest between the two islands. Santorini is gorgeous but my favorite was Mykonos. We went to several beaches there - one was named Paradise Beach and the other was Super Paradise! I thought that was so funny. It is also the only place I've ever gone topless on the beach....

We are going to Crete for two weeks this summer. I love Greece! With the long flight from the U.S I recommend two weeks, especially If you want to do some island hopping. A lot of what we tourists associate with Greece happens on those small, individual islands.
Skiathos and Skopelos are the classic greek postcard islands, and wasn't parts of Mama Mia filmed there? Crete gives you more variations. We are going to get a rental and visit Kournas lake, Lappa village and possibly Knossos.
