Yesterday DD and I looked at my oldest scrapbooks. I loved seeing my kids' precious little faces and remembering their younger years. But some of those old layouts are horrid. We laughed at quite a few. DD has been drawing for several years now and has improved quite a bit. She felt sorry for me and brought out some of her old art to make me feel better. I love her early drawings and would never laugh at them. They're adorable. Some of my early layouts …not adorable.
Anyway, do any of you redo any layouts? Why or why not? If not, is it because there's not enough time or because you feel that what's done is done? Or something else ?
I don't have any plans to redo anything but it did cross my mind.

If it were me, I wouldn't touch them because what's done is done and I have so much that I still want to scrap. If the photo and memory are documented well then that's what would be important to me. Just me though.  |

I feel the same way about my oldest son's. I decided when I'm finally caught up I will redo it. FYI I will never be caught up :-p

I like to see my progression in style. I like to revisit what was popular "back then". Those things are also a part of memory keeping.

I have only gone back and redid one layout from years ago. Very glad I did, but I won't do anymore. I don't like my earlier pages now, but I did at the time I made them. I like to see how my scrapping style has changed over the years. |

For me? what's done is done, and that's the way I did the pages at the time they were made. I might add more details, or add more journaling, etc. if it's one of those "all photos and no journaling whatsoever" layouts, but I will NEVER rip up and totally re-do a layout that I think is no longer 'in style.'
But that's just my opinion, of course. (also, I have new, 'fresh' photos that still need pages made-- if I don't have time to scrap THOSE photos, I sure don't have time to re-do any old ones, either!!) |

for ME - the only layouts I have or plan to redo are the very earliest where I used a scrapbooking glue stick and they are falling apart and some of the cardstock is discoloured.
Otherwise - the older layouts are part of my scrapbooking journey AND I don't have time...

You all make some really good points. Those layouts are definitely cringey but I just don't have the time. Now that I think about it, I think the question I should have asked was do you wish you could redo your cringey layouts?

I have redone a lot of my favorites pages, as well as photoshopping and reprinting the photos as 5x7s. So many of them were really old, faded, and small and I've been really happy with the results.
Mostly I have done my kids and favorite landscapes from trips. DH has always been a good photographer and many of his were 3x5 from the 70's when we didn't have a lot of options for printing and they turned orange after a few years. I also ruined some by cropping when I first started scrapbooking in 1999. I went back and found the negatives and reprinted them.
I am frequently "caught up" and out of photos to scrapbook. It's something I work on when that happens.

I once in a blue moon scrapbook it again, with another copy of the photo(s).
I don't dismantle my original layout. I don't trash it. I just do it again, if I have another story to add, or paper that is just perfect, or I'm, just that much better.

nope, I don't wish I could re-do my earliest pages. I have re-scrapped a particular photo AGAIN, if I want to do it differently, but no more than that. Like I said, though, I have on occasion, added journaling, added an updated sticker or two, but no more than that. I have also taken photos of photos and used THEM to re-scrap a page about a different topic, or to add detail. Heck, I've also taken photos of early SB pages and used those photos to make a layout about my scrapbooking!  |

Not. If I were to redo a LO/book every time I thought my old ones looked bad, I'd never scrap new stuff, because I'd always be redoing things. My first 3 albums were awful, but they show me where I started.
If I found a photo on a ugly LO that I truly loved, I'd just scrap it, again, having 2 LOs of the same photo, and not redo a whole album.

Spielberg regrets the ET update. Your pages are a snapshot in time. Who is to say that if you redo them in your current style you won't find them cringey in the future. Remember when shoulder pads were popular? Leave them as they are.

We did the best we could with the skills we had and the materials at hand.
If I want to use a photo again for another page in a different context, I will reprint it and scrap it again. But for me, what is done, is done. I have lots of new photos to play with and will do the best I know how with the product and tools I own now.

I have redone so many layouts I can't count. When I did them I had very little product and I didn't know how to use it. I did not enjoy looking at my albums. And the early albums were some of my most important photo memories. I redid them. I used product that fit my telling of the story. I embellished and journalled to complement with the memory.
I do not look at old layouts like how far I've come the way I would hang on to a child's art work. I don't care about a 'scrapbooking journey' or anything like that. I am scrapping my memories and don't give a fig about 'leaving them alone because what's done is done.' I look at it like I built my house out of particle board because it was all I had, and plastered old newspapers on the walls to look pretty. Then I had the chance to use oak, and put in windows, and buy curtains. Yes, I built my original house with what I had doing the best I could. But given the chance I fixed it up, I improved it, I learned and made the best use of better supplies and made it into something I enjoy.
I am not going to work so hard to preserve my memories and keep them in books that embarrass me, that I don't enjoy looking at, and that now I could do a better job because I have the perfect supplies. Many people scrap by trends. I am not talking about redoing layouts because you now use thickers and mists on every layout and you used to use paint. I came into a style I like about a decade ago, maybe longer, and I am now able to use even the oldest product and make a layout that is pleasing to me.
I always say, if you want to redo it, redo it and be done with it and move along. I treated those early layouts as though they had not been scrapped. I removed, reprinted, repaired or replaced the photos and it took me no time at all.

A friend who used to scrapbook came across a half finished layout and she laughed and laughed about it. She had printed a picture of her blonde kids in black and white and then colored in their hair with a yellow marker!  BUT she finished it from that point. I should have learned a lesson from her about laughing at myself. I can certainly laugh at myself in other areas so why not this one? |

myboysnme , thanks for that post.  I have redone one or two layouts in all the years I've been scrapping. One of them was a picture of my first baby soon after she was born. Now that it's redone, it's one of my favorites.

I've redone a few. If I couldn't stand to look at it, I re did it. I don't think my style has changed much since then and I'm not very trendy...

I haven't redone any of my old albums but I did do new pages with some of my favorite photos from those days. I don't have the time or money to redo entire albums.

I'm with myboysnme but DD19 is not. We came up with a compromise that is working well for us. She loves those old layouts from 1997 on, so we choose layouts together that we both agree can be redone. Sometimes there's a challenge with it like reuse the original journaling, patterned paper or embellishments in a better way. I also have quite a few albums before I used a style that is not so cringeworthy. Maybe a few years worth. These are my girls baby pictures!!! So I compromise and it's working pretty good. |

I have several that are falling apart (adhesive issues) or that have dark and crappy photos on them (before I had photo-editing software). My plan is to take photos of the LOs (or scan them), then use the photos of the LOs to make a page about scrapbooking as a hobby. I'll likely retell the stories in another format (PL-style look-back or something). There's not a huge number of these, though, so this is a manageable project for me. I'm primarily motivated by making the photos better, and using better quality supplies. I plan to toss the originals.

Themed embellishments and blocky matting...
I also have plenty of those ...but the memories are still the same ,I just laugh at my " art"

If the pages are such that you just can't stand to look at them, and the page design / photography / whatever actually ruins your enjoyment of the memories captured ON the pages, then by all means, make them more enjoyable! I never really thought about it that way- but then again, I actually don't go back and look in my albums very often, truthfully... I'm more about the 'process' of making scrapbook pages-- that's kind of when I relive the memories and the experiences.

I think it might have a little to do with the time frame we began scrapping. Some of my pictures are cut with those crazy scissors or silhouettes of people...ouch! To cringe every time I look at my beautiful babies...it's sad. So I've saved some and I love them now.
I don't feel that way about layouts that were done ten years ago, and they aren't all winners either! We really have learned a lot along the way. Design principles stand the test of time even if we don't love the product that was used.
