We did the best we could with the skills we had and the materials at hand. This is the best point I could make about my first few years. I am 100% self taught, I had no internet, no scrapbooking stores anywhere near me and the products that we did have access to were fairly limited compared to what is availbale today. I still laugh at my first album and how differently I scrapbooked once we got a LSS. I have always wanted to go back and redo a couple of my layouts. The first few that I did were of my 18th birthday, my formal and a bit later in I did my 21st. They are so far removed from what I would create now. We only had photos printed from film and in the one size, there was no croping and editing and having smaller sized photos and probably my biggest gripe is that I never journalled back then, I have so much to say and there is nothing there on those layouts. I would never rip apart those layouts and save anything, I will be kepping them as they are a part of my journey in this hobby but yes would like to remake those ones.

I have only gone back and re-done my wedding album because it was in an expensive Hallmark Album that fell apart. Everything else stays put as a demonstration of how far I have or have not come.

For the most part, I wouldn't. I cringe over the sticker sneeze on a birthday layout I did for my husband way back when we were dating. That was my first album in 1999!
The exception would be two of my layouts in my daughter's baby book. The title page and the page of her birth stats. Those two pages never felt right to me even when I had just finished them and put them in the album. I added a bit to the title page and improved the feel but it's still not right. I have some ideas of what I could do now. If I find the right supplies, I may redo them.
I think those two pages are an exception for me. That sticker sneeze birthday layout (and others) I did like at the time they were made. Since I've never liked the two baby pages, that's why I have no problem with redoing. They've never been loved by me like my other (out of style) pages.

That is why it is taking me so long to make my daughter's baby album, I want to still be happy with it years down the road. I think if there are certain special pictures I might redo those.

I'm not against redoing a page. However, I wouldn't redo mist of my older pages because I like seeing the progression of my own art and because there are so many stories to tell that I can't see having the time. I only redid 1. Page from the beginning because it was a cut the photo in shapes page and even though it was popular at the time, I didn't like it, and it was an important story (1st son birth)

Your comment answered that for me. I do not consider my scrapbooks 'my art.' I am not scrapping for artistic purposes. I am scrapping to tell my stories. I think of it like writing an autobiography, and it gets edited to make it better and more reflective of what I want to remember and say about those memories. Even if I did have an interest in how far I've come it would not be a stronger interest than having pleasing pages that evoke memories. If I have a godawful layout of my son's birth, I want to look at the page and remember his birth, not have a laugh at my hideous style. Now I recall from the old Pub board on 2peas that there were many discussions about scrapbooking being art. I now recall that many of us do scrap for artistic expression. It now makes sense to me. I adore the process of completing pages, but I think it is one of the reasons I am a fast scrapper. I am working towards a goal of completion and am far less interested in the process or the art that is expressed.

myboysnme , thanks for that post. I have redone one or two layouts in all the years I've been scrapping. One of them was a picture of my first baby soon after she was born. Now that it's redone, it's one of my favorites. That's your answer. Redo the ones you want to redo, and enjoy your memories! That's exactly what I do. Here' how I see it. I have old layouts I like, old ones I don't like because of how I laid them out, and old ones that I think are funny because of some trendy (at the time) lay out. I redo the second kind. Obviously, not the ones I like and not the ones that I think are groan or eye-roll worthy because of their style from the time. But the ones I don't like because of how I laid them out? OUT THEY GO. If I look at a page multiple times and every time I'm going "Uck, I hate that", I pull the pix off and re do it - I can't even always reprint because some were back from the film camera days. I have never been disappointed about redoing a page. Now when I come to it in the album, I go, "that's much better!" and I'm happy about it. So, I say, if you have time and some pages really bother you, RE-DO!

It's not about art for me, but I do have fun and enjoy the process. My purpose is to document memories. I have trouble enjoying the memories while cringing about my early scrap style. Your posts have helped me decide that redoing some layouts will make my scrapbooks more enjoyable for me. Thank you.

Never. Not just because there's too many pictures and not enough time, but also because - "who cares" if the layouts aren't perfect and not what I would do now. Styles and projects are always changing and I think it's neat to look back and see where I was artistically at certain points. It makes the pictures no less special.

I have some pages that are super bulky and don't really say much so I have thought about redoing those. I will just take a picture of the layout first so I have that. I have also cut down some layouts from 12 x 12 to 8.5 x 11. Maybe one bothered me later but I do have pictures of it.
I am thinking about redoing my first sons baby album- well the pages I have done...Because of bulk and I don't really like them. We will see as I have a baby on the way (another boy!) and my other two sons books aren't done - lol
I have gotten rid of layouts I don't like after they are done. If I don't like looking at them, I take the pictures off and toss them. This is rare but I just see it as messing up on a art page and deciding not to keep it.

Re-do is something I will not think about until I'm caught up. If I was caught up I would consider it. But with all the unscrapped photos from my 3 dd's who still send me photos even though they are young adults, I don't see it ever happening for me. (Oldest dd is getting married soon, so I bet grandkids will come before I catch up)

I have never been disappointed about redoing a page. Now when I come to it in the album, I go, "that's much better!" and I'm happy about it. This is definitely me. Like myboysnme seeing the progression of my style is not important to me, I am more interested in having photos and stories. If a layout makes me want to turn the page quickly then it's a good candidate for re-do. I will say I have plenty of pages that are not in the style I scrap now including my fair share of CM 2 triangle and 2 strips pages and photos cut into wacky shapes. When I started I usually didn't include the stories which I now know are one of the most important things to me and is one of the key reasons I re-do.

Elsabelle, Glad you have a decision you're happy with. I think being happy with your scrapbooks is very important.
