We have one day for light hiking and sightseeing and I'm trying to choose between Blackwater Falls State Park, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge or Dollysods Wilderness Area. Is anyone familiar with the area and can weigh in on any of these three areas?

I grew up in WV and have spent time in all 3 places. My favorite by far is Dolly Sods. The scenery is fantastic. And this time of year you might see a bear or two since blueberries are in season. The roads are frequently washed out by summer storms, though, so it might be kind of rough getting there.
Blackwater Canyon has a rails-to-trails trail that's pretty steep. If you're looking for a workout, you'll get it. The trail is pretty smooth, so there's no rough hiking. Scenery is great, too. I want to say it's about 10 miles up but you don't have to go that far if you don't have time.
It's been many, many years since I've been to Canaan Valley. I can only remember riding the ski lift at the resort, then having to walk back down. It was summer and I was in my teens.

Thank you! I'm leaning towards Dollysods and then I just saw there is a road that connects it to the Wildlife Refuge.

A FYI, Canaan Valley isn't pronounced like the Biblical Canaan. I made that mistake when we first went there to ski and was laughed at by my WV relatives. It is Kuh-nayn, with the emphasis/accent on the Nayn. Just to save you from giving the locals a good chuckle.

Is anyone familiar with the area and can weigh in on any of these three areas? Some of the best white water rafting I've ever done was in WV when I was in grad school at Ohio State. I don't know if that is of interest to you or not - you need more than one day to explore!

My DH says to go to Dolly Sods. He says that of the 3, it is best for hiking. I would love to elaborate, but that's all I could get out of him.
