we're going to NYC for the day this coming sunday. It will be me, my husband and our 19 and 20 year old daughters. We will be taking the metro train into Grand Central so we will be around Times Square area but can take a cab or subway to other locations if needed. We are looking for some fun, touristy things that we can do for the day. Our original plan was to go to Madame Tussauds, but my husband doesnt seem into that. Would love to hear some ideas!

What kinds of things does your family enjoy doing together? So many options...that info will help us narrow things down for you....museums? shows? shopping? wandering neighborhoods?

When I was researching stuff to do for a 2 day trip a few years ago, I found a bus tour that seemed like fun. The seats were placed stadium style to face the sidewalks rather than the front. The whole side of the bus was one big window. At various stops, the crew will jump off and perform some acts to entertain. It's called The Ride. But it's limited to just the Times Square area I guess. For $74/pp, that might be bit of pricey way to see Times Square! But it does sound like fun!

What do your daughters like to do? Mine likes to go and shop and check out fun stores (like stationery shops). But we also have loved "touristy" things when we visit-- boat ride to see Statue of Liberty, walking up and through the Empire State Building, etc. So many choices!!

I'd go to a matinee on Broadway as my main event for the day.

they both like to shop for sure! Are the Bryant Park winter shops still open?
museum of natural history is out as they have both been there twice. But another fun museum would definitely be an option.
Id also like to see the Statue of Liberty. You cant go up inside anymore can you??
we'd also like something good for lunch....were thinking of that Black Tap restaurant with all the cool shakes but not sure if it will be mobbed.

I just went for one day with my 23 year old son about 2 weeks ago. If you are going for one day and arriving at Grand Central, I would walk down 5th Avenue and shop at Saks 5th Avenue and other shops. I would keep walking down to Central Park at 58th St and do a quick walk through the corner Central Park West. Then I would walk back down 7th Ave to Rockefeller Center. I would possibly go to Top of the Rock for dinner, but make a reservation! You will see all of the area lit up at night!
Then I would walk over a block or two to Broadway, walk down Broadway a few blocks and see all the marquis. Then keep going to Times Square and see it all lit up. Walk back up 42nd St to Grand Central.
If you are up for that walking you will have taken in a big variety of activities and everyone will enjoy seeing the sites.

I did it a couple of times and the route was from Times Square up to Columbus Circle. It's a good way to have some fun, see NYC, and not freeze. Check Groupon; sometimes they have deals. The Statue of Liberty: you would be going downtown for that and it takes several hours, between getting on the boat and getting there, looking around, getting back. So plan on that being the main event if you are doing it, then maybe go somewhere like Mario Batallia's Eataly to shop and eat. SaveSave

If you are SNL fans, I think the NBC studio tour is on again. It was a highlight to my teens a couple of years ago. They also really enjoyed a Tv & Movie location walking tour of Central Park (DD was a big Gossip Girl fan). If just picking one museum, I'd go for the MOMA or one of the Tenement Museum tours or to the 9/11 Memorial.

The shops in Bryant Park are closed now. I always like the Met. I have not been to the Tenement Museum, but I've heard good things about it. Statue of Liberty - you can go inside, but it's not likely you will get tickets on such short notice.

We went to the Black Tap when we were there over christmas. We went to the one in midtown. We did the Moma first and then went there. We waited about 2.5 hours. I thought we would go, split a shake for a midafternoon snack. After that wait, it was after 5 so we had dinner, each had a burger and each had a shake. The burger and fries were outstanding. The Shakes Amazing! I am not a big one on sweets so I could have definitely shared one but DD didn't want too. We sat at the bar and I was talking to the bar tender... they had only been opened a few weeks, and he said that was a typical wait! There were four large 6-9 people parties in front of us. The 9 party had a lot of little kids and waited almost 4 hours. Which I could not imagine. THere were 2 of us, and the 2 girls in front of us got in about 30 mins before us.. sort of luck of the draw. If you are willing to split up your party you can get in quicker. That day we did Central Park, Tiffany's, the MOMA, and The Black Tap. We could have done one more thing but we were leaving early in the morning and needed to go back and pack up.
