I need help finding something to help me map a trip. The hard part is trying to find a stopping point between El Paso and San Antonio that allows us to have as close to equal driving hours each day of driving. Right now, the only option I've come up with is 10 hours across two days, but I don't think my kids will be able to handle it...I'm really hoping to make it 6-7 hours a day for three days, but I need help with a good planning resource to see if a 3 day drive is even possible. We've only made the trip once before (one day drive, just my husband and I 7 years ago...this time we'll have three small children in tow) so I don't remember anything other than my shock at how desolate it was between El Paso and San Antonio.
ETA: We are driving from Las Vegas to Houston. I specified San Antonio just to give an idea of the route we were taking, sorry for the confusion!!

google maps shows 7 hours 40 minutes from El Paso to San Antonio. I would stop in Ft. Stockton if I needed to stop.
Welcome to Texas where we specialize in desolation! But the roads are straight and you can drive 80 miles an hour. Bring a good book on cd and make sure you have movies and games for the kids and you are good!

We always love to stop in Van Horn and stay at El Capitan but, Elaynef is right Fort Stockton is your best bet. Even going the speed limit there's no way it would take 10 hours. Seems like we stayed in Sonora once as well.
Don't miss the drive from south of Houston heading west. All dam day just to get to El Paso.

I wrote a crazy long paragraph and didn't specify my destination in the updated version (I tend to talk a lot and tried condensing). Our destination is Houston (or rather, just outside of Houston). It's 10 hours from El Paso...I stated San Antonio because it was the next major city...I was heading out the door to get my son from school when I posted and didn't have a chance to proof. Apologies!

I wasn't clear...we are heading to Houston...I was just using those two cities to illustrate our course...didn't proof and I should have. When we went in '09, we considered driving longer just to have more to do but hubby's friend in Dallas wasn't available, so we didn't bother and instead drove through all that nothingness!! I was sick on our drive home, so I made the drive from Houston to San Antonio and hubby drove the rest of the way...I woke up only once before the TX border and that was because El Paso border patrol needed to know the person (me) curled up under a blanket in the front seat knocked out due to cold medicine wasn't being trafficked against her will. We do the drive from Las Vegas To Orem, UT frequently and the nothingness between Zion and Orem is pretty depressing, but fun for long conversations about nothing in particular (hard to have them with kids whining in the back, though, lol).

Stockton would be the perfect option. It puts us exactly where I want to be. It's just under 7 hours from here to Tucson, just under 7 hours from there to Ft. Stockton and just under 7 hours from there to Houston. Seems perfect!! Thanks so much for the suggestion.

We drove from Orlando to Vegas and back last summer. On the return trip we went Vegas to Sedona,AZ then to Soccoro, NM, to Midland, TX to San Antonio. Lots of driving but we all agreed that we LOVED San Antonio so we are headed back this summer. Just Orlando to San Antonio & back. Our hotel in Midland was awesome for a family of 5 and reasonable price. I remember looking at Fort Stockton while trip planning last year & see plenty of places to stay but we traveled a more Northern route and stopped in Midland in order to go thru Roswell, NM during "Roswell Days". Have fun!
