Is this being held for something specific, or just as a pleasant uniting thing to do? I've been on vacation so don't know if St Louis has had a difficulty recently.

There has been massive protest, looting, and rioting sparked by the death of an unarmed black individual by a white police officer. Things have been happening so fast that I haven't been able to keep up like I should, but if you google "Ferguson riot" you'll get a ton of information.

It's even worse now. The media is being kept out, arrested and teargassed. What is happening is OUTRAGEOUS. I can't believe it to be honest.

Gwad I just realized I only lived 7 miles from there. I lived on the other side of the airport basically! That is scary to think of.

I'm not ready to make a trek for a candlelight vigil when there's still information coming out about what really happened. I ranted earlier that Jay Nixon needs to get off his ASS and send out the guard. Things are getting seriously out of hand down there.

Yes, from everything I've read today, it's turned into absolute chaos. I'll admit that I'm concerned and feel very uneasy about the present situation. I'll be the first to admit that I have it pretty good here in the middle of nowhere. Very seldom does anything of this magnitude happen here. That's not to say we don't have our share of troubles and tragedy, but we are definitely somewhat sheltered when it comes to incidents such as what's currently playing out in St. Louis. But Ferguson, well, it's a little too close for comfort. It seems like things are just getting worse and worse and I'm afraid of how bad things will get before it's over.

My cousin works in Ferguson across the street from the Target that got looted this week. She said it is scary driving to and from work these days.

We are just across the river from STL in Illinois and I had planned on taking the kids to the zoo tomorrow as our summer break finale. Not a chance I will venture over there any time soon. I can only imagine what kind of effect this is having on the industries that rely on tourism dollars.
I have no solutions for the unrest, I just hate to see people and places that I love and are so close to home being destroyed.

I lived in St. Louis for a few years during college and post grad school, and I have to say that I am not surprised that any of this has occurred on either side. I am sorry that it is happening though.

The govenor has put the Missouri highway patrol in charge for now, and an FBI investigation is running concurrently with the local investigation into the death of Michael Brown. I don't condone the looting, or violence on either side, but it sounds like the local and county police did more to escalate the situation than to relieve it. The treatment of the legitimate media trying to cover the situation was criminal too, IMO. Hopefully things will calm down now.

It's even worse now. The media is being kept out, arrested and teargassed. What is happening is OUTRAGEOUS. I can't believe it to be honest. OUTRAGEOUS!!! AGREED! Marianne Williamson just posted her thoughts on this and I think they're spot on: shared Marianne Williamson's status. 7 minutes ago Truth! CITIZEN ALERT: WHAT IS HAPPENING IN FERGUSON, MO. IS HAPPENING TO ALL OF US
Another young black man has been shot and killed for ...doing nothing. You're not being an alarmist if you're naming facts that are truly alarming.
When police kill unarmed citizens, that's not police work -- it's murder. When citizens gather peacefully to protest, and the police are out in SWAT gear with AK-47's pointed at the protesters, that's not acceptable -- Americans have the Constitutional right to peacefully assemble. When any of us avert our eyes from what is happening in Ferguson, MO. -- and in New York, and now in Los Angeles -- that's dangerous.
This situation is urgent, and our freedom is on the line. The situation is particularly disturbing because of the danger posed by this pattern of police overreach to African-American men particularly. But this is not just a black issue. It's an American issue, and it is not something we should ignore. If this kind of thing is happening to any of us then it's potentially happening to all of us.
This is not a time to be numb in America. Watch this on TV. Read about it. Spread the word. The worst thing that can happen is for the police or the government to figure that they can just ride this out -- that in time, we'll get over it. Two reporters now have been arrested and manhandled, as well.
We should not just "get over it." I have great admiration for the people of Ferguson who showed up peacefully on Wednesday night, standing with their arms raised in front of those policemen standing there with heavy military gear. And thanks as well to the journalists who are there, and doing their job.
You go, Ferguson. We're standing watch, and we're with you. Like

I've started and deleted umpteen threads on this today because I can't find the right words. The whole thing is terrible but when the President of the United States has to go on television and tell civil law enforcement that they can't arrest reporters who are doing their job, something has gone very, very wrong.

I agree. I've spoken out on a few Facebook threads and the comments are sickening. I am not a cop hater but these police officers have gone way to far. They need to back off. I can't believe this is happening in the United States.

Agreed. I feel like I'm in another world. I'm so confused and baffled at what is going on. I thought it was crazy when the FBI got involved, but now the president...

The governor sent in the Missouri State troopers, who have seemed to calm the situation. Without riot gear, without tear gas.

When I saw the head of the MO state troopers marching in line with the protesters last night, it was clear that things were going to get better. Imagine that, treat the citizens as people with a legitimate grievance with a right to peaceably assemble instead of taunting them to attack and calling them "f***ing animals."

What makes me sad is that it seems so many are just ignoring this. Crap like this should never happen in our country. I hope that police department is dismantled and those involved are charged.

I saw photos last night from vigils held all over the country, and even London. Even if it's not getting as much attention as it should, those who let it get as bad as it did aren't getting away with it yet, and have much to answer for. I do hope and believe some good changes will come out of this tragic affair. NPR has had good, even coverage of the whole thing.

This is still a developing story and I've refrained from commenting on it here and on FB thus far. The police need to be accountable for any actions they take, but they also have a very dangerous job and there are two sides to every story.
I just hope that now that the eyes of the entire nation are focused here that the full truth comes out with no cover ups and justice will be served.
The only people I find disgusting are the looters that used this tragedy for their own personal gain.

I get most of my info from Tumblr, which does skew to a younger demographic, and all information posted should be verified because they do tend run with a sensational story without exactly checking the accuracy. But everything I saw about Ferguson and Michael Brown on Tumblr was getting reblogs into the tens of thousands, so people here and across the world were paying attention. Palestinians were even tweeting to the people of Ferguson information on how to deal with tear gas exposure. It was rather surreal.

Again, I'm not surprised. I had police officers approach my car with guns pulled on two separate occasions because I was driving 5 miles over the speed limit (the only two times I was stopped, by the way). They are a different breed.

There is still more coming out about this story. I don't think all of the facts are known yet. I will say that people absolutely have a right to protest, but what they don't have a right to do is loot, shoot at police helicopters and throw molotov cocktails at officers. I don't care how mad you are or how terribly you think you have been wronged. I'm not exactly sure what the police are supposed to do when peaceful protest turns into violent and dangerous behavior.
