Let's talk about scraps. Do you use your scraps? I try to use mine. If I am doing more than one layout at a time I make an effort to use the scraps from the first on the second layout. I know some people will make cards with their leftover bits of paper. That's a great idea if you are a card crafter.
I think how you store your scraps can make a big difference in using them or not. If I have scraps left from a collection of paper that I still have a good bit left they get stored with that paper. That way when I go to use it I see immediately what scraps I have available to use that coordinate. Just random scraps get thrown in an open box that is approximately 12.5 x 9 inches. A little bigger than shoebox size. I just dig through to see if there is anything I can use. I keep the box close to my workspace so it's easy to grab it and look for something. I did keep my scraps in hanging files, but I never used them. Loose in the box seems to work best for me.
How do you store your scraps? What tips do you have for making good use of them.

I do the same thing. I scrap by collection, and I always keep the collection together and store the scraps with it. It makes me happy to get so much mileage out of paper that I love I do need a better system for cardstock scraps, though. If I've chosen a cardstock because it coordinates well with a collection, I often keep the cs scrap with that collection as well. But my previous system of keeping them in an accordion file by color got tedious and didn't get used. (Then it got water damaged and it all got trashed ) I'm about to move in to a Workbox, so I'll have to see how my stuff fits in, then maybe I can use some of the bins for a better system, but I'm still open to suggestions!

I throw my cardstock scraps in with the pp scraps. I don't keep the box overly full so it's not hard to dig through and find what I need.

I always have 12x12 strips left over, so I have started to border punch them instead of tossing. They are great for layering, and I am actually using them!

Mine get thrown in a box and kept nearby as well - it seems to work. I do like the border punch idea!

I sort mine by color in drawers. Then when I need a color I go there first. Sometimes I try to make LOs with just my scraps.

I keep my patterned scraps with the collection. My cardstock scraps I throw in an easily accessible drawer.
I tend to scrap by collection and I'm hesitant to move even the smallest scrap to another location.

I keep all my cs scraps in those clear folder thingys by color. All my pp scraps are in a drawer. I do try to use up my scraps as much as I can.

I use all my scraps. A piece of paper has to be pretty tiny for me to discard it.

I typically scrap by collection or kit so scraps are stored there until it is killed. I need to figure out a better way to store the other scraps I have since I moved. Right now they are just living in a 2 gallon ziploc that is next my cardstock.
I do find that i reach for them often to keep the pile pretty small. I also toss scraps that are smaller than 4x4ish unless I love love the paper. I also purge my scraps every couple months or so. I'll weed out any that have been there along time or I said if it's still there next time I purge, it's going. I don't hesitate tossing scraps because I've already used a good portion of the paper and have so much more paper to choose from and there is always more paper coming out that I want!

I save ALL of my scraps until I can cut nothing further from them. Heck, I paid for that, by golly I am going to use it! The circles on this layout are all scraps: I also save 12" strips for borders, I don't precut them into any particular shape, I do that when I am actually working on a page, because I never know what type of border I may want to use and if it is precut, that shape might not go with what I am working on.

I keep the majority of my scraps but there comes a time when they are just too small and they have to go. I have had the same system since I started scrapbooking, large scraps go into some 12x12 envelopes I have and the smaller scraps go into a folder that is sorted by colour and then pattern type, it is a really simple system but it works for me. I always look for a scrap before I cut into a whole sheet of paper.

I have my paper scraps stored either with: slabs in an envelope (made by me) adhered to the back cover - all sized slabs 6x6, 8x8 & 12x12 or single pieces in a box so I can shuffle through (not the greatest system, but at the moment, works for me)
cardstock: ALL scraps are stored in a suspender file box - a file for each colour stored in ROYGBIV order, with black, brown, white/cream, grey, metallic, vellum bringing up the rear.
When I am making a card or LO - I will go there first to find the smaller piece to stamp, punch, diecut, mat etc before cutting into a full sheet.
(when I make my own kit, I will not do this - full sheets)

I do save any scraps bigger than 3". How I store them is a little wonky. Anything smaller than 12x12 goes in a portable file box w/hanging folders, sorted by color w/patterned paper having it's own folder. 12" scraps have a section in the Cropper Hopper vertical storage thingie that holds the corresponding color. Unless it's patterned and then it has it's only little CH folder thingie. Unless it's from a collection and then it's stored w/the collection in it's CH thingie. Does that make any sense at all, lol?
Like pp's, I do go to my scraps first when matting, etc.

I keep anything size scrap that I think I can punch or run through a steel die and cut a shape. I love using my scraps to make embellishments.
I store my scraps by color in Cropper Hopper folders. This works great so I can just select by color when I'm picking papers to work with. I am trying more layering these days and I can pick papers to either layer or cut/punch embellishments.
One more great use of scraps is for experiments. When I want to try a technique for the first time, I will use scraps in case it doesn't turn out like I hope.

I always go for my scraps first. Great for die cutting. But I don't keep small pieces. I have a legal size expanding file case thing. I labeled each with a colour, then I have a specialty, metallic, floral, and collection section. It has to be 4 x4 or a 12 inch strip for me to keep it. And if its a colour I have lots of and its not a good size piece. I will throw it out. When I'm working and cutting I live my in use scraps out and try to use them up as I'm working on a project

If I love the pattern, I'll keep any sized scrap. Cardstock, I keep pretty much any size. I store all of them in a 12x12 scraponizer box which sits open on the table while I scrap. I try to keep the cardstock together, but otherwise there's no order. I go through it all the time and use scraps on just about every layout. The box is not that thick so it keeps it from getting out of hand.

This is an awesome thread!!! I have 2 drawers I just throw everything into. After reading these ideas I am realizing I need a better solution for my storage!
I do use my scraps on LO's. I seem to end up with a lot of strips, so every once in a while I just do a page with strips of paper with on a piece of cardstock. I have used up a ton of scraps this away. I do not know why, but these LO's are some of my favorite!

I try to use up all my scraps. I keep them in ziplock bags by color and have them in a box. When I am ready to scrap I take out my box and go through that before I cut any paper up. Another way I use them up is pick a day to make cards just using scraps and nothing else. A little challenging but it can be done

I am more likely to use my scraps for smaller projects such as cards, box cards, and sometimes for additional layouts.
I think the easiest way to use scraps is to make cards with the leftovers as soon as the layout is done. That gives me a card that I can grab when I don't have time to make one, and it's easier to store a completed card than loose scraps.

I saw a page somewhere online yesterday that featured several border punched strips. When I get home tonight, I'm going to use up all those strips lying in a pile!

I sort mine by color families and store them in a divided paper holder. I wish I could remember the company/brand. It works beautifully.

I have a good sized stash that makes me very happy to look at.
I have a small rubbermaid tote of scraps.
I would RATHER use the scraps to make a layout than say cut up a brand new piece of paper. It terrifies me to have to cut up paper. I hate it. What if I don't like what I did with it. What if I hate it. Scraps who cares. It's just a scrap of paper right? No big deal.
Yeah I have issues. I love my scraps more than my real paper!

I have one box folder which once full I will only add to by die-cutting shapes from scraps or just chucking them. That way I end up with a file that's only got my very favourite papers in, so I tend to use them quite a lot and rarely bin any.

I do a great job of storing and organizing them but not such a great job of actually using them. I bought a few sets of the 12x12 Sterilite drawers that fit right under my desk and put one color family (cardstock only) per drawer. When I need to cut small pieces and know I won't even need one full sheet of a color, then I'll dig around to see if I can find anything.
A big part of my problem is that I haven't had a lot of time to work on my personal projects and my studio is disfunctional. Most of what I do work on for work, I need multiple sheets of the same color and scraps usually won't work for that. The time I spend trying to make them work offsets any money I'm saving by using up scraps, so for work projects it's just not worth it. I keep them because at some point I'll have my studio organized so I can go down there for short periods of time and actually be able to work on things without having to spend 45 minutes looking for stuff! Once I can do that, it will be a lot easier to burn through some of those scraps on cards, individual layouts, etc.
Every so often when the drawers get too full I go through them and pull out any usable sized scraps in colors that I know are discontinued or that I just won't use soon and donate them to a school or charity that can use them along with all of the strips and scraps of patterned paper that I have laying around. Places like that love getting nice quality paper for their kids art programs, cards for those in the service or vets, etc., so I can feel a little bit better about it than just hauling it all out to the curb for recycling.
