I owe my daughter's boyfriend money. Did not for one second think the U.S would make it out of Group Stage. Scrappy bunch they are, I've loved watching them play. They shocked the heck out of me with the Germany game.
It's been really cool to see soccer grow in the U.S. Even compared to the last World Cup interest is way up. We went to a friendly between Poland and the U.S in 2011 at Soldier Field in Chicago. Felt bad for our team, Poland fans outnumbered us pretty bad.
Anyone watch Brazil vs Chile today? Love shoot outs!

Ha Ha! I hate shootouts. It's such a lottery -- the goalie guesses, and he either has a chance or not. It seems like such a letdown way of ending the game. Other than that, Brasil/Chile was awesome. It's fun to see the "home team" progress to the next round.
I NEVER thought the US would get out of the group of death. Woo hoo.

Yeah, I always wonder what will happen when/if Brazil loses. You know those crazy people down there love their soccer and hate to lose.

Ack I was really wanting Chile to beat Brazil.
I think I posted somewhere else - I have drawn Algeria and Mexico in the sweepstakes at work and, shockingly, both are through!

I'm loving this World Cup! We closed the office early on Thursday to watch the game. So glad USA is on to the next round.

The penalty shoot outs suck. Not a nice way to win or lose.

Oh yeah! That was a crazy game today. I couldn't decide who I wanted to win but I guess I'm happy that Brazil is still in it. Italy is out so our house is rooting for Argentina and the US.

Today was a great game....I know people don't like shootouts and just want someone to win outright, but the suspense made for a great game! Now if only someone would talk to Alexi Sanchez about his booty shorts!

Like hockey, I don't mind shootouts in a regular game, but I just feel that progess in the playoffs or in a bracket shouldn't come down to a shootout. That said, I played soccer through high school and a long OT may have killed me

The game was great! Being soccer fans and following the International teams this was an awesome game. I think thats the way the game should be played out at this level. Both teams were on point and as any player or fan knows -"anyone can beat anyone on any given day." Although it was heartbreaking it was indeed a "world cup" match.

The fun thing about the shootout to me was that we were watching at lunch. DD(8) played soccer this past year, and she's not particularly an athlete. They let all the girls play goalie, and she was the last one who got to do it. It turned out she is an absolute natural at goalie, and was making everyone's jaw drop. She got really excited about it, and proud of herself, which was totally awesome as she has a lot of problems in life. So, watching a game that in the end really did largely come down to the goalies was really cool for her!

I have won and lost hockey games in a SO and I hate it no matter what - you don't really feel like you won OR lost in a SO. My thoughts are that it's a team sport and you should win or lose based on the strength and play of your TEAM, not just one guy. And to be knocked out of the bracket is just a travesty, IMO.
