I always use the recipe on the package from the German chocolate. But, it is not gluten free.
German chocolate cake with coconut pecan frosting is my all time favorite!

We also use the one inside the baker's chocolate box. I would also check the taste of home website. I find many of their recipes to be the tried and true kind.
