My dd needs a TI-84 and they cost over $100 here and I have been trying to find one cheaper. I have contacted 5 people on Craigslist, bid on 4 on eBay and I still don't have one. UGH!!!!!! I guess it's time to cut the grocery budget and buy a new one. *****Update****** I wanted to thank Craftmepink for helping us out, she sent my dd her old TI-84!!! Words are not enough and we will pay it forward! I love this place.

Did you try posting on Facebook to see if anyone on your friends list has an older child that isn't using theirs anymore that would be willing to sell it to you?

my son needs one for college so i don't know if it will work, but we found some apps that do the same thing so he's going to try that at the beginning of school and see if it works, otherwise we'll track one down. they are painfully expensive!

What about online like from Amazon? Or do you need it sooner than it would arrive?

There are some listed used on Amazon starting at around $60. Could she use a TI83? They're available for even less. Back when my oldest D first needed one (albeit about 8 years ago) they could use either the TI83 or TI84 as both had the functionality they needed.

I asked her teacher if there were any suitable substitutions we could use and she was very emphatic when she told me no.
Office Max has it on sale for $99, I think. But before I go there I am going to check out Amazon as suggested.
Thank you everyone for your ideas!

That's about half of what I paid for my DD's TI calculator (Voyage 200). She still uses it. She started her college math classes as a sophomore on high school and will be a Senior in college now. It was worth getting a new one that didn't have any issues.

The apps are fine for most homework, but here kids can't have phones during tests. So we still have to buy one.
The school has enough for class work but not enough for every Test taker.

Can you post on a local Facebook yard sale site to see if anyone has one to sell?

oh good point, will have him ask his professor for sure!! I used mine in multiple classes and not one professor allowed phones during exams. I'm surprised you got through high school without it tbh. We just bought one for dd. for algebra, it will go all the way through college. The other thing about them is they last forever.

his school had a class set so he just used those. i never had to have more than a scientific calculator when i was in hs/college, even thru 2 years of calculus in college so i'm new to all of this

It is easier for the teacher if everyone has the same calculator, and I don't think that is a bad thing in this case. Buttons & functions are all in the same place and substitute options are not really less expensive. Trying to get a hold of an older one is the best bet to save money.

They are hard to find used because kids will need them in college. And then they don't think about it. I still have mine from high school. It's 30 years old and works well. But I have 2 kids, so I'll need to buy another this year. I'm waiting to see what the teacher wants them to buy.
The graphing calculator app does work, but the teacher will teach the kids how to program short cuts and it's easier if they all have the same calculator. DD used her phone for Algebra 1, which she took in 8th grade. But they only used the graphing part of the calculator for a few weeks. With her Algebra 2/Trig class this year, she will need the actual calculator.

Target had the TI-84 plus C Silver edition on sale for $85 this week. I used my card and got another 5% off. Kicked myself too because I had a $5 gift card I forgot about. The only difference DH and I could find in that one and the TI-84 is the Plus C has a color screen. But it was cheaper!
They are worth the cost though, they can use them for college and for the SAT, ACT, and AP tests.

They are expensive, but my oldest got hers as a freshman in high school and uses it still as a senior in college. Younger sister has on now and is going on her 3rd year in high school with it. You most likely will never need another calculator for your child.

You most likely will never need another calculator for your child. Exactly! It's not a throw-away item and it will get her through high school and most likely college. My DD even passed hers on to her brother who's 12 years younger. The schools are really specific about which calculator to use because they want the students to have one that will get them through 4 years of math classes AND that they won't be able to store things in memory on. $100 is a small investment for 4+ years of use.

We bought one for my son when he was a freshman. He uses it every year and it will go to college with him in the fall. I think it is worth it when they USE it a lot.

Be sure to get a sharpie and put your child's name on it and inside the battery compartment.
They do last forever! I have seen students drop theirs off of the desk and it did not break.

Pawn shop. Sadly, I thought of this because my nephew left his unattended in the library and it was stolen. His dad replaced it with one from a pawn shop.

Yup- we just had to get one too. We had the option to rent them from the school for $30 per year, but I figured she will need it all four years of high school and beyond, so I may as well just buy one. She also came home today and told me she needs a one hundred dollar dress for choir. Yikes. Makes the middle school fees seem like pocket change! Lol!

We got off easy for my 14 and 16 yr. old in elem. school. We spent about $20 on school supplies. Now they will be in 10th and 12th grade and we spend so much! For my oldest we had to buy 3 books for summer reading, then bought that expensive calculator last year, plus the cost of AP study guides/AP test (spring expenses), and the rest of the school supplies. We don't buy any new clothes until late October because we spend so much on school stuff for the beginning of the school year.
At least my 11 yr. old is still cheap for school supplies!

My daughter sold my husbands that we had out there for her to use to add things up at our garage sale. Haha We have had to buy 3 in the last 6yrs but each child is now using them in college.
