I'm a pretty simple cook and have never even used this stuff. I decided to give it a try but I'm not sure what to use it in. Roasts? Marinades? Sauces? Any recipes to share?

Panzenella! I'm making it on Sunday--yum. I use Ina Garten's recipe, but add another teaspoon on the vinegar and another half teaspoon of the mustard. It's lick your plate good.

Use it in marinades, potato salad, pasta salad, salad dressings, coleslaw. I'm sure there is more but that is just off the top of my head. Also, when I use the red wine vinegar in recipes I usually add a little sugar also.
Edited to remove redundancy.

I don't make a lot of regular salads but I do make potato and pasta salads. Do you use it in place of the regular vinegar that's called for?

Yes, I rarely use regular white vinegar for anything except cleaning. I really like red wine vinegar and use in a lot of things.

Actually, I use this one: PanzanellaBut the other one looks good, too. They are pretty similar. Panzanella is basically a tomato and bread salad. I love the crutons. I make it all up ahead of time, keeping the crutons, veggies, and vinaigrette separate, then combine them all before serving. Make extra crutons--they are tempting to snitch before dinner!

For potato salad I soak onion slices in regular vinegar before adding to salad. That's about the only time I use white vinegar to cook. You can actually soak in any kind of vinegar. It adds a nice kick to the salad and makes the onions a little milder.

I use it in homemade bbq sauces, chinese dishes (like sweet & sour chicken), warm german potato salad, and a few other dishes.
I also use it in place of apple cyder vinegar as dd is lactose intollerant and can not have apples.

Sweet & Sour ChickenI actually use the juice from the pineapple and only use at most 1/4 cup sugar. Last week I used almost 2 tablespoons. It was just sweet enough but still had that tang.

What's with all the thread asking about my favorite ingredients today? Don't you girls know I'm on a diet? Then you make me go hunting through my favorite recipes and I start drooling! I use it in some slow cooked BBQ beef recipes, usually mixing it with things like tomato paste, Worchestershire sauce, dark soy sauce etc to make the sauce or marinade. I sometimes chuck some in my bolognese sauce. It adds a nice rich flavour. Yummy in sauces for steak as well. I make this Dukkah Crusted Pork with Sweet & Sour Capsicum (I think you call them bell peppers instead of capsicums?). The red wine vinegar is used in the sweet and sour sauce. This is another one of my favorites, but I haven't made it for ages. (1) because it is a lot of work, and (2) because no one else seems to love it as much as I do! I wish I could find the original link with a picture, but this is the only link I have. I originally saw the recipe on Better Homes and Gardens (Australian version). Moorish Pork and Red Capsicum Skewers with Lemon Mayonnaise. The red wine vinegar is in the pork and the spicy pear relish. I've also used it when making red onion jam. I don't have a link to a particular recipe but I'm sure there are plenty. (I actually prefer to use balsamic vinegar most of the time, and I use them interchangeably in some recipes.)

I also use it in place of apple cyder vinegar as dd is lactose intollerant and can not have apples. I'm curious as to why one can't have apples if they are lactose intolerant. I thought it was strictly limited to milk/dairy products. Just wondering because DH has found he can't tolerate lactose, but eats lots of apples. OP - I use it with a pasta salad recipe that I have. After seeing all these great recipes, I'm going to have to try some of them as well! Apples contain lactose. Not the same lactose as it is fructose but its still a sugar. Eating an apple, just like drinking milk, makes dd extremely gassy. It was her attending GI while inpatient that told us to stop the apple juice. Sure enough, gas went away

I use it on salads and I also add a splash to my spaghetti sauce if it's a little flat. It doesn't take much, but sometimes, it's the exact thing to brighten a blah sauce up.
