Oh, what the heck, it's also the money. I live on a limited income and hate not getting what I paid for. I have a lawn service that mows and edges my grass once a week on Friday. I write a check and slip it under the front door mat - have been doing it for 5 years and nary a problem. Well, today, I put the check out before I left for my water exercise class a little before 9 and the lawn guys came after 2. I get a text message from the owner that the check was not there. So, I stopped payment on the check, which cost me $25 (the amount of the check). I think one of the workers snaffled the check for himself, but of course, I can't prove it. I considered not stopping payment, but then somebody would profit from their dishonesty, I would have to write another check, and I'd be out $50 either way. I set up a Chase Quick Pay account and told the owner I'd be paying him that way from now on. If he's not happy with that, then I'll be hunting for another service.

Ah the good old days when we never locked the doors and left the keys in the car! Ancient history.
Sorry this happened to you. You did right cancelling the check and perhaps the auto pay will turn out to be a good thing after all.

$25 to stop a cheque?!!! Wow! Aside from that, what a shame if someone has taken it furtively and in doing so spoiled a system that's worked for years. I guess nothing lasts forever;(

Wow to charge that much-I thought they didn't charge unless the check tried to pass through. At least that has been the way it was in the past with BOA. I wonder if they have changed?

My credit union charges $20. Sometimes you just have to pay it and get it done.

So you've been very happy with your lawn service for 5 years and because of one lost check, you're firing them? The check was under the mat for at least five hours. You've been doing the exact same thing for five years, you're dang lucky a check hasn't gone missing before this. There are all sorts of people who could be watching you put out that check every month. You weren't even home to know who passed in front of your home. It's not fair to instantly assume that one of your lawn guys is a crook. these are hard working men who mow lawns all day lawn in the summer heat and most of them know that if checks started disappearing then the boss would be investigating the problem. Your system was theft waiting to happen and should have changed years ago. You don't even know it was stolen. It could have been lost some other way. Sorry, my son worked on a lawn team this summer and I would hate for someone to think that just because he's got a blue collar job he's a thief. Electronic pay is the way to go when you aren't going to be home to hand over the check in person. You know it's getting to where it belongs and if anything goes wrong you can dispute the charge.

You have to admit that is not a good place to leave a check. I am surprised you did that for 5 years and this is the first time it has gone missing. It might have blown away in the wind.

My credit union charges $25 to stop payment on a check as well. It sucks when you have to do it because that is quite an amount of money for nothing. I would not have been brave enough to leave a check under the mat anyway though.

I think you are assuming too much. Chances are the check was either lost in the wind or taken by someone other than the lawn service. It is your responsibility to make sure the lawn service is paid in a safe manner. My daughter and I use the same lawn service. Since she works full time, she prepays for ten mowings (or more, not sure). She makes sure to hand him the check or mails it to him. If I'm not home to pay the lawn service, I mail them the check. Never have had a problem. But then I would never ever leave a check under my door mat! LOL

Watch your account. Thieves are good at duplicating your checking account information from the check!

We bank with BOA and are charged a $25 fee for stopped checks. I wonder if the fees vary by state and account type? It stinks to be out $25, OP, but I think you did the best thing by stopping payment. I hope the auto pay works out well for you!

Watch your account. Thieves are good at duplicating your checking account information from the check! Yes, I'd be more worried for some scam transaction with the checking and routing numbers from your check. That could Cost way more than $50 Keep a sharp eye in your account

Whoa! Time out! I didn't say I was firing them. I know it isn't the best solution and I realize I've been lucky up until now. I just hate that I had to pay a $25 fee to the bank to stop payment on a $25 check. I have never used electronic payment before and wasn't sure how it worked, but I got it set up and from now on I'll pay him that way. I am not judging anyone because of their job - I can't do it myself and I depend on those guys. And for the record, this service has only been doing my grass this summer. i will probably never know what happened to the check and it's a somewhat costly lesson for me. So back off on your tirade.

That would bother me too. I would also cancel the check. I think it's a good idea to pay as you are. We are always on a tight budget, and it's usually about the money for us and the principal.

I'm sorry you had to cancel the check, and be out an extra twenty-five bucks. That sucks.

The bank was probably a local bank with this policy and was then bought by BOA. We have BOA, which used to be another bank, which bought out original bank from 25 years ago. So we have a "military bank" account with BOA. We can deposit checks at a BOA branch, but they don't go into our acct immediately. It's been over 10 years now and I'm not sure if it all even applies anymore.
