"At first, 61-year-old Senji Nakajima’s interest in his love doll, named “Saori,” was purely to fill feelings of loneliness. But after a few months of living with her in his Tokyo apartment, Nakajima, (who is married and has two children but lives away from home because of work) started to think that the doll had developed her own personality. She became more than an inanimate object to him; he began to think of her as his girlfriend. Of Saori, Nakajima said, “ She never betrays… I’m tired of modern rational humans. They are heartless…for me, she is more than a doll…She needs much help, but still is my perfect partner who shares precious moments with me and enriches my life.” Getty Images photographer Taro Karibe, much of whose work is propelled by a desire to examine humanity’s sometimes fragile identity, decided to tag along with Nakajima and Saori to see what life living with a silicone doll looks like. These photos show what he found out." She never anythings, bud. But I guess for a lot of men, it's their dream come true. No complaints, No periods. No nagging. No saying "Not tonight". www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-sight/wp/2017/01/30/what-life-is-like-living-with-a-love-doll-in-japan/?utm_term=.8e789ae56c5d

I think maybe you have two trains of thoughts going at once, or two threads, and they collided.

Thanks. Fixed it above. Yes, LavenderLayoutLady - lots of trains in the station :*) Good thing no one was hurt. While I'm here, might as well add a pic.

That is just odd to me. But dolls kind of creep me out, another side effect of too many Twilight Zone watchings, so I would be worried that she would start talking or wouldn't be where I left her when I got home. I guess he isn't hurting anyone, but I do wonder what his wife and kids think.

How odd! He looks so pleased with her. I wonder how his wife feels about his new "girlfriend" and their adventures.

Either TLC or Discovery Health did a series on people who live with "dolls" years ago. One man had several and one man, who had just one, went places with her.

Each decade had commercials for toys from that decade playing in that area. There was one for a "just like me" kind of doll that was as tall as a little girl. You could dress it w/your own clothes. The end shot showed the little girl playing w/the doll girl on a see-saw. As the camera panned out, the entire shot was doll girls around the playground. Freaked the crap out of DD. Found it:

Talking Tina Twilight Zone. I hate dolls. It's like he's living his own version of a romance novel without having to be with someone.

That's whackadoo.
But, Ryan Gosling was in a very good, if quirky, movie called "Lars and the Real Girl." His character ordered one of those dolls and well, the story takes off!

I feel sad that he has become so attached to the doll - it reminds me of women who become extremely attached to life-like baby dolls.

Found it: When I was about 6 I had a full-sized doll. It was probably in the mid 60s. I don't know for sure, but I'm wondering if it was a Patty Playpal. Interesting. I haven't thought about that doll in years.

I loved Lars and the Real Girl. I found it really moving. His loneliness, and his community's kindness really got to me.

Finally, FINALLY someone mentioned Lars! One of my favorite independent films, ever. I discovered it through a Pea thread that was recommending independent movies on Netflix, probably 3-4 years ago.

I love how he has to take her head off to change her clothes This! I watched a documentary by accident late one night about this...I was about to go to bed and I was like "what's this rubbish?" and 40 minutes later I was still sitting on the couch watching! The one I saw this Japanese guy was calling the doll his girlfriend and he was talking about having sex with her...but then he would take her out on dates and takes photos with her, BUT in order to take her out, he'd take her head off and carry it around in a bag That's the part I had the most trouble with, OK you're a loser to likes to pretend your sex doll is real, but if you are pretending she's real, then how do you justify carrying her head around in a bag?? That's just truly disturbing and a little too close to serial killer for my comfort.

Why did he have to take her head off to take her out? I don't recall exactly (it was around 3 am when I was watching!) and it was in Japanese with subtitles but I think it was something to do with transporting her...I just remember he had her head in a duffle bag, then he took her out into the country side, put her head on, then talked about how much she was enjoying the scenery...then he took photos of her. It was very weird.

I remember watching an episode of My Strange Addiction about this, it was really quite sad listening to the guy talking about how his doll fills his lonely existence.
