I've been job hunting. I've gotten several interviews but nothing has worked out. Well I interviewed for a job last week. Seriously this job would be perfect for my new degree. I got notified by two of my references that they've been called about me. So it looks like there is a strong possibility that they may offer me the job. I should be happy and excited, right? Well all I feel is sick to my stomach. I have been underemployed for so long I don't even remember the last time I had a challenge at work. I have been working as a secretary for nearly ten years now and this position is for an accountant. This is a whole new career move for me. I'm scared. All I keep thinking is what if I fail? I know this position is going to have a steep learning curve. I feel like I need some encouraging stories from you guys about starting a new career and that it worked out for the best. I need to be excited about this opportunity instead of scared.

You've shared some brave stories about yourself before. You pursued a new degree and made changes. Other people and potential employers noticed!!! You've got this. Really!

Take a deep breath.
You can do this.
Will it be hard? Maybe. But the good things in life are hard.
Again, you can do this.

Oh, you can do this! Sure there will be a learning curve, but going to school, managing a fulltime job and raising a family have proven you are up to a challenge!
I think it is better to go in a bit nervous than being overconfident, TBH.
Crossing my fingers that you do get an offer.

i can understand your excitement and i hope you get the new job! my sister is in accounting and has been interviewing for the past few weeks. we has worked at the corporate offices of a major cosmetics company for 15 years but she was done with the 1 hour commute. two jobs came up 1.2 miles from her in the same building. totally different fields. last Friday, she got offered one of the jobs. her stomach was in knots for days waiting to hear from either company but in the end, it worked out. no more killer commute. great new environment and a chance to learn a new kind of accounting software that most other companies are using.
you can do this! you will thrive in your new field!

I'm going back to school this summer to finish my degree in accounting. I'm 51 years old and I'm so scared to be putting myself back out in the real world. For the last 29 years I've focused on being a mom and keeping our company and family books. I'm not sure I have what it takes to do this, but I'm going to try. I'm so glad you're out there. Please keep us posted. Marcy

Don't be scared! I'm going back to school and thinking of new directions in which to take my career. It does cause me some anxiety, but think of all the opportunities you now have to grow and learn! There may be a few mistakes along the way, but how we solve them is what matters.

They certainly wouldn't waste their time calling your references if they weren't interested, so that is good news! You are motivated, willing to learn, brave and obviously willing face challenges head on. You can do this!

You can do this. There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever. Every challenge you've posted about here, you've worked and kept at it until you've made it. This is just going to be another challenge, another notch on your belt of success.

Try to think of yourself from the same perspective they are. What makes you the ideal candidate? Why are your skills strong enough for this role? Sell yourself to yourself like you would on an interview

Coming from a different field has its advantages. They will be able to train a new employee the way THEY want to. No bad habits to break The fact that you are so nervous shows how much you care.

This is great news! I hope you get an offer that's even better than you expected. Being nervous and scared is such a normal reaction to changing jobs. You went to school to change careers, you wanted it that bad! You are determined, smart and kind, so I have no doubts you'll slide right into your new career. Expect a few bumps, but remember this was your goal and you obtained it.

We all have to start somewhere, right? You got that degree for a reason. Yes, it'll be a learning curve, but you have a new degree. Obviously, you know how to learn, successfully. It's normal to be nervous, but don't let the anxiety overtake you. Pull all of your tricks out of the bag that you use to calm yourself and your emotional reactions. You've worked hard for this and it's finally going to happen. It's exciting and a very good thing, too.

Once you get there, you will figure it out. Trust me. I am always terrified to strike out at something new, yet underneath my terror and insomnia, I am really excited to do something new. Just breathe through the fear and know the excitement will win out once you get past those first few days. Good luck!

You know what, everyone feels that way at times. We all think we are not as good as people think we are or we are not as good or smart as others.
Well, you ARE. You earned that degree. Now you can get out there and use it.
I really, really hope you got the job!

I know this position is going to have a steep learning curve. I feel like I need some encouraging stories from you guys about starting a new career and that it worked out for the best. I need to be excited about this opportunity instead of scared. I am sort of in your position. I returned to school to update my skills and get a career after staying home to raise kids (had a bachelors from 30 years ago that needed refreshing). I'm also losing my vision (mostly blind at this point with a Seeing Eye Dog) to a retina disease. I finished my Occupational Therapy Degree after two grueling years of school and passed my boards much to the dismay of the director of the program who told me I had no business in her program. To say it hasn't been an easy journey is an understatement. I've been working PRN off and on for the past month, and the first few days I was scared shitless. I have been working on and off for a month or two now and it turns out I might be okay doing this and maybe even pretty darn good at it (too soon to tell). Do I still have a ton to learn...yep...will it make my head spin some days...yep...will i still come up against the resistance with my visual impairment and my dog...yep...but you know what, just go out there and do the absolute best that you can every day and you will amaze yourself! The first couple of months are a kind of fake it until you make it scenario but you can do it!! You studied hard, earned the degree, now go out and use it! Sandy
