So, I stopped drinking D Coke 30+ days ago, but every once in a while (once every 2-3 weeks), we like to go to Sonic during happy hour for a drink. I like having a cranberry limeade or Sprite with a flavor added. Well, Sprite has calories and is made with sugar. Diet and Zero are made with aspartame. Is it better for you (yes I know neither is great, but I believe in moderation. ) to have the calories and real sugar or the chemicals and no calories?

From a personal standpoint, I'd go with the calories and real sugar and work a little longer/harder to counteract it.

Since you are indulging in moderation, I think natural sugar is better than chemicals. Even if you weren't, I personally prefer natural sugar to chemicals. I tend to think that natural engineering is better than man's maneuvering, but that's just my 2 cents.

I very rarely drink either kind of soda, but when I occasionally do, I usually drink it with real sugar. Well, except when I go to Sonic ... I always get a diet cherry limeade, and then inevitably I think, why didn't I get the real thing?? Dumbass. (Me, not you.)

I'd choose sugar over artificial sweetener any day.

My thought exactly, but just checking. Some things in the "Eat this, not that" books surprise you! So, I was just checking to see if I was right.

I'll back you up as well. Real sugar isn't great, but fake sugar is the devil. There are worse things than extra calories. Those you can offset by eating fewer calories at the next meal or exercising longer/harder. You can't offset poison.

I don't do sweeteners, so if I'm going to drink soda, it's real soda.

But is the HFCS in most soda better for your than artificial sweetner? I don't know the answer, just wondering...

In general, I think real sugar in moderation is a better choice than artificial sweetener. However, HFCS is a whole other thing. All the name brand sodas are made with HFCS, so I don't know.

The sugary one probably has 'crave chemicals' in it too , so I'd just have whatever one you prefer. You may find you don't actually enjoy it anymore anyway.

Once every 2-3 weeks? = whichever you fancy I'd agree with the majority though.

Well-hypocrite that I am, I will say that the real thing is probably better for you in the long run. But, when I cheat?? It is a McDonald's diet coke every time, so what do I know?

I'd go with this one.
Firstly I don't believe that artificial sweeteners are of the devil, I also don't think they do the average person any harm. My issue with them is that because they are *so* sweet, I do think that if they are consumed regularly it does makes people crave more sweet food...so they end up adding more sweetener or consuming more sugar overall.
I think if you are only having it once every 2-3 weeks then artificial sweetener is way better than consuming a truckload of sugar. I just googled quickly - I found a site that said a Sonic diet cherry limeade has about half a teaspoon of sugar, the non diet version (medium size) has about 15 teaspoons of sugar (the Route 44 size has 30 teaspoons!). So that's probably a reasonable 'ball park' figure for their other drinks.
I think if you wouldn't sit there and put 15 teaspoons of sugar into your mouth one after the other...then you shouldn't drink that much either. That's an awful lot of sugar to consume in a drink. Considering the recommendation is for adult females to consume no more than 6 teaspoons of sugar per day.

Thanks for that info, pjaye. I was on my phone when I posted and didn't have a chance to look it up. I appreciate it!

I think the amount of sugar is what makes the difference...if we are talking one or two teaspoons, then I'd say go with the sugar rather than the artificial sweetener. But when it's 15 or 30 teaspoons in one drink, then I think the chemicals are a better option than that much sugar.

So, I get the diet version because it's 25 calories. The Rt44 regular is about 500 calories. That's a full meal worth of calories ALL from sugar. Not a good choice.

I can't imagine consuming that much sugar is a good thing, ever. But I don't think artificial sweeteners are the devil's work, either. And as a diabetic, I'm grateful for the diet drinks I'm able to consume. Plain water gets old FAST when it's your only option. Plus, I drive 30 miles (60 round trip) about once a month so that I can have a diet cherry limeade.) they are just that good.

I don't often drink sodas. Actually I don't care for sweet drinks of any kind which of course is of no help to you at all.
I do like milk shakes though, hmmm wonder how much sugar is in them.
But to be honest I would choose natural rather than chemicals.

I would go with the diet, for the same reasons PJaye said. I don't live on artificial sweeteners, but I don't think they are the absolute devil that others do. And I don't consider a regular coke as being 'natural sugar' anyway, since it has HFCS in it. Real sugar to me is what you find in fruits and dairy. Soda is all chemicals. Regular or diet. I'd rather have chemicals and no calories then chemicals + 300 added calories.

I'd go for the diet version. My reasoning has always been that I'd rather eat my calories than drink them.

I eliminated the chemicals. Also low fat/no fat because they take the good stuff out and replace it with fillers. I use stevia drops now to add a little flavor with water. I have not been a soda drinker for many years so I don't miss that. I did get the stevia rootbeer and it is a hint of flat rootbeer which tastes good.
